A man charged with slashing his 11-year-old great-niece's throat was jeered Monday as he arrived at a courthouse to be arraigned on a charge of attempted murder.

The 47-year-old man was also charged with sexual assault and sexual touching of a 14-year-old girl between February 2004 and last month.

His lawyer, Christian Crevier, asked that his client be sent to the Philippe Pinel Institute for a psychiatric evaluation to determine if he is fit to stand trial and if he understands the seriousness of the charge.

The results will be presented to the court at the end of the month. In the meantime, he is forbidden to communicate with the alleged victim or any witnesses.

The girl was in stable condition in hospital and has a 20-centimetre knife cut from ear to ear, her mother told all-news channel LCN.
