The body of a man was found in Water Works Park Friday afternoon and police are investigating the death. Officials say a man walking his dog in a wooded area near the Raccoon River discovered the body north of the river and called police at 3:36 p.m.

Sgt. Jason Halifax says there doesn’t appear to be any obvious signs of trauma to the man’s body but there are some unusual facts about the death that are raising questions. The body, which was described as a white male in his 30s to 40s, was found lying on its side and clothed but wasn’t wearing a coat or shoes.

The Des Moines Police Department have identified the body that was found in Water Works Park Friday afternoon. Richard Miles, 41, of Des Moines was found frozen in the park with no shoes or coat on. His cause of death is still being investigated, but Sgt. Jason Halifax of Des Moines Police said there is no reason to believe his death is suspicious.

Though police aren't sure yet exactly how long Miles was in the park for, Halifax said the body was frozen solid, suggesting at least a few days. A missing persons report was filed for Miles in early February by his place of employment. Halifax said Miles was a veteran, and may have suffered from post traumatic stress disorder.
