Nigeria - Rev. Phyllis Sortor, 71, Fremont, 23 February 2015

US Missionary Kidnapped in Nigeria; $300K Demanded
(NEWSER) – Five armed men stormed a school in Nigeria yesterday morning and kidnapped an American missionary there, reports NBC News. The Rev. Phyllis Sortor, a Washington state native working with Free Methodist World Missions at the Hope Academy, was apparently targeted as she was the only one taken and no one was injured. Kidnappers have demanded $300,000 for her return.

A prayer vigil was held in Fremont Monday night for the Rev. Phyllis Sortor. She is a missionary with the Free Methodist Church. The prayer vigil was held at the church located adjacent to SPU.

The church said in a statement that the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria had been notified and the State Department and FBI are working with local authorities to rescue Sortor, according to NBC. A State Department spokesperson said officials are aware of reports that a U.S. citizen is missing.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

"When from a long distant past nothing persists, after the people are dead, after things are broken and scattered, still alone, more persistent, more faithful, the smell and taste of things remain poised a long, long time like souls, ready to remind us, waiting, hoping for their moment amid the ruins of all the rest, and bear unfaltering in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence the vast structure of recollection."

Kidnappers of American missionary in Nigeria demand ransom

The armed men who abducted an American missionary earlier this week in southern Nigeria have demanded a ransom of nearly $300,000, police said Wednesday.

    [snip]

"The general concept here is that Americans have money. So they thought that by kidnapping her, they can get money," he said. "We don't think it's a good idea for the family to negotiate with the abductors on the ransom because we are sure we will find her."

Police are collaborating with security forces to make sure Sortor's return is secured.

According to this article on Yahoo today, Rev. Phyllis has been released and is safe. I gotta say I didn't have faith here. I really thought she was a goner. Praise the Lord!
