The Bedford County Sheriff’s Department told News 2 it was “obvious” Espy was murdered. She was found naked and bloody.

Sheriff Austin Swing also said she suffered “obvious trauma,” but it wasn’t clear if she had been shot or stabbed.

The exact cause of her death has yet to be identified pending autopsy results.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is assisting the sheriff’s office in the investigation.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Bedford County Sheriff’s Department at 931-684-3232.

My guess: caretaker beat her, killed her and then didn't know what to do with the body. My guess only

Just horrible, mean, and sickening! I cannot imagine what she thought as this was happening. Sociopath or drugs, IMHO.

Lois Jean Espy, 86, apparently lived alone, Bedford County Sheriff Austin Swing said Thursday, but has family in the Nashville area.

"It's a death investigation at this time," a Bedford County detective said Thursday when asked if investigators have a suspect.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a news release that 60-year-old William Russell Brace was arrested Sunday morning and charged with first-degree murder for the death of Lois Jean Espy...

During the course of the investigation, the TBI got information that led to Brace as the person responsible for Espy's death in her Murfreesboro apartment, and the individual who moved her body.

Brace is being held without bond in the Rutherford County Jail.

June 2015:

“I just snapped,” William Russell Brace told Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents in late February. “I’m a sick (expletive).”...

Monday was a preliminary hearing ahead of a grand jury ruling expected in September. Brace is being held without bond at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center.
Further charges are pending, said J. Paul Newman, assistant district attorney.

Man gets life in prison for killing Murfreesboro woman, stuffing her in suitcase

The man who violently murder an elderly woman, mutilated, stuffed her body in a suitcase, and dumped it along the side of a road in Bedford County pleaded guilty to first-degree murder Thursday.

William Brace was sentenced to life in prison, having to spend at least 51 years behind bars before he’s eligible for parole. He will be 111 years old before that happens.

He took the life of his neighbor, 86-year-old Lois Jean Espy.

“We still don’t understand why he did what he did,” longtime friend Cecilia Prince said.

Knowing the way she died is still emotional for her brother, Dan Parker.

“I’m glad to see him put away, and he won’t ever do this again,” Parker told News 2.

“I’m thankful that justice has been served,” Prince added. “Jean was a wonderful kind, giving person that befriended everyone that she knew as she did with Mr. Brace.”

By all accounts, Lois Jean Espy didn’t deserve to die a violent death.

The 86-year-old woman had dedicated her life to helping others through a prison ministry before she was murdered by her neighbor William “Bill” Brace in 2015.

“She was an incredible friend, mentor and, last but not least, mother,” said Norris Randall, Espy’s friend who benefited from her prison ministry.

Her dedication to spreading the word of God took her around the nation, family and friends said Thursday after Brace, 63, entered a plea of guilty to her murder.

Randall said he first learned of Espy when he was incarcerated in Georgia and her prison ministry sent him encouraging letters. After he was released, he moved to Murfreesboro where he met and befriended Espy.

“It doesn’t matter where you come from or your path in life, she would give to you,” Randall said.
