The public can help search for a missing South African catamaran crew through an online tool, their families said on Wednesday...

The catamaran, Sunsail RC044-978 set out from Cape Town for a delivery trip to Phucket, Thailand, on December 14. The delivery was for US-based world maritime leisure business Tui Marine.

“The current 'Lost Catamaran & Crew At Sea' enables people all over the world to search satellite images that are loaded by Tomnod for this specific campaign,” the families said in a joint statement.

The aim of the campaign is to search for the Leopard 44 catamaran that was being delivered to Phuket, Thailand, by Anthony Murray, Reg Robertson and Jaryd Payne.

On the Tomnod website, www.tomnod,com, people are asked to tag objects as either ship or boat, life raft or “other” in images...

This is the online Tomnod search for Sunsail. I can't help more here as I'm hopeless with these searches, but I know some of our posters are very good...

The families of Anthony Murray, Reg Robertson and Jaryd Payne believe there is real cause for concern as the yatchsmen last made contact via satellite phone on January 18, they said in a joint statement.

Based on the yacht's co-ordinates at the time - in international waters around 2190 miles north-northwest of Perth, Australia - the estimated arrival date was February 2.

“On February 12th, the family of Anthony Murray reported his catamaran as overdue to the Maritime Rescue Co-Ordination Centre (MRCC) in Cape Town.”

The same day, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) issued an “all ships broadcast”, seeking sightings reports. The broadcast also encompassed the maritime safety areas of Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and India.

The catamaran Sunsail RC044-978 set out from Cape Town for a delivery trip to Phucket, Thailand, on December 14. The delivery was on US-based world maritime leisure business Tui Marine.

Skipper Murray, 58, has over 25 years experience at sea, including multiple international catamaran and yacht deliveries.

Robertson, 59, is also an experienced yachtsman and a member of the Royal Natal Yacht Club. Payne is 20 years old.

By Sunday, the yacht's Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) had not been activated.

Cape Town - A Bellville mother is beside herself as her son – who went on a catamaran trip – was last heard of in mid-January, and was expected to arrive in Phuket, Thailand, onFebruary 2.

“No, I haven’t been fine. I’m very emotional, and sometimes feel like I’m going to have a meltdown if we don’t find something soon,” said Lisa Green.

Her son, 20-year-old Jaryd Payne, and two other crew members, Anthony Murray, 58, and Reginald Robertson, 59, are on the catamaran being delivered in Phuket.

The last contact with the yacht was via satellite phone on January 18, and was reported to be in the mid-Indian Ridge Region about 2 300 nautical miles north-north-west of Perth, Australia.

Skippered by experienced yachtsman Murray, the Sunsail RC 044-978 left Cape Town on December 14 to deliver the catamaran to Phuket for world maritime leisure business TUI Marine.

Robertson’s daughter Storme had no words to describe the horror of not knowing whether her father was alive or dead, or suffering out at sea.

Lost Catamaran & Crew at Sea

On February 2, a Sunsail Leopard 44 catamaran and its crew of 3 were expected to arrive in Phucket, Thailand but they never arrived. Search and rescue measures began February 12th.

The purpose of the trip was to deliver the new vessel from Cape Town, South Africa to Phucket, Thailand. Officially, the catamaran is carrying enough food and supplies to last them 65 days. The crew includes Anthony Murray (Skipper, 58), Reg Robertson (59) and Jaryd Payne (20).

The length overall (L.O.A.) of the catamaran is:
42ft 7in
The waterline length (L.W.L) of the catamaran is:
41ft 8in
The width (beam) of the catamaran is:
23ft 9in

Must have been something catastrophic if EPIRB wasn't activated.

Ill have to go look and see if one of the boards like cruisers forum has picked up the story

Cats are kind of known to break up in open water in bad storms, etc. It is autumn is the southern hemisphere. I wonder how the weather has been in this area.

ETA: two category 5 cyclones recently in that area. Doesn't bode well for them...

From February 2016:

Murray’s sister-in-law, Diane Coetzer, said the photographs of the hull suggested none of their loved ones could have survived...

The three families were informed by their lawyers on January 18 that an upturned hull had been sighted by the Brazilian naval vessel Amazonas off Cape Recife near Port Elizabeth.

Coetzer said the recovery of three sailors’ bodies would bring a measure of closure to the families.

http://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/kwazulu-natal/bid-to-probe-yacht-loss-1981026

The distraught families of the three South African men who went missing on the catamaran Sunsail in January last year have called for a Court of Marine inquiry into the seaworthiness of the wrecked yacht...

The families’ spokeswoman, Diane Coetzer, said they wanted to know if the vessel was appropriate for the scale of the voyage undertaken and sought information about modifications to the original design. They also wanted to know why the delivery had been scheduled in a high-risk period with unpredictable weather.

A hull, widely accepted as that of the missing catamaran, was found last month off Cape Agulhas. It was being towed back to Cape Town last Wednesday but apparently the tow broke and it was lost. It’s now believed to have sunk.
