How tragic! And brazen!! It's sickening that one of the suspects has five prior offenses. I wonder what they are for?

My heart goes out to the officer's child, family, friends and fellow officers. RIP.

The wounded officer was taken to Temple University Hospital, where Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey convened with other officials Thursday night.

Two armed men walked into the store shortly after 4:30 p.m., according to a police source, and started shooting. The officers were already inside.

Wilson was shot at least twice, the source said.

One of the assailants was shot in the leg and taken to Einstein Medical Center.

The GameStop is located in a strip mall next to the former site of Connie Mack Stadium, which was demolished in 1976.

Robinson Rodriguez, whose family owns a grocery store at 22d and Lehigh, said everyone in the store ran out to the street when they saw police cruisers flying by. They watched as an ambulance took the officer away. Around 6 p.m., police walked into the store, looking for witnesses, and told the Rodriguez family that the officer had died.

"I was hoping he was OK," Rodriguez said. "To hear he's dead, I don't even know what to say."

There have been robberies in the neighborhood in the past, Rodriguez said.

"But nothing like this," he said. "Not people dying like this."

The last Philadelphia officer killed in the line of duty was Moses Walker Jr., who was shot Aug. 18, 2012, after his shift in an attempted robbery near a bus stop. Walker, like Wilson, was an officer in the 22d District.

Some of Defendant Hipps's Background:

It is a reasonably safe neighborhood. I've been to that strip mall many time, though never in that store. My ex-girlfriend lived about 4 blocks from there; I like about a mile from there. My next door neighbor's daughter works about 2 blocks away. This Jill Scott video "A Long Walk," was filmed in the area. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSYMKUtNuw8

Truly tragic.

Looking at Hipps's background...was he jailed for the various crimes committed in 2004? It only says "held for court". If so, when was he released? Some of the other charges, from prior incidents, say either "guilty" or "nolle prossed" (which means essentially that the charges were dropped, as far as I can tell). Does anyone (richrd or J.J.?!) have any ideas?

They may not have been adjudicated until 2006. It might have been a plea bargain. He was sentenced to 10 and served five, so maybe a 2011-12 release.

I see...it says on the last line...

11/16/2006, confinement, 5 years min - 10 years max

It also says a Gagnon I hearing is slated for 3/12/2015. This is in relation to the new charges, right?

Thanks, richrd and J.J. for helping me understand the docket documents. I was just watching the Philly news and there was a report which was so moving. In it, Officer Wilson's sister and grandmother spoke of him and it was heart wrenching. May he rest in peace.

Officer Wilson was apparently a good guy. He was active in his community and had volunteered to wear a body cam as part of a test program. So sad. :(

Wow. The Palestra. They must be expecting a large turnout for his funeral. What a lovely thing.

A police procession through the streets was just the start of a weekend full of tributes to slain Philadelphia Officer Robert Wilson III.

Hundreds of fellow officers walked in the solemn march. They marched to 52nd and Whitby streets where family members watched the impressive show of honor and unity. Then, in a very moving tribute, the legions of officers saluted Officer Wilson's family...

Officers from across the region and the country gathered together at Francis Funeral Home in Southwest Philadelphia on Friday. Outside the funeral home sat Officer Wilson's police cruiser with his name emblazoned on the side.
