Searching for Answers in Monroe County Cold Case

Wednesday marks four years since Tobyhanna man suddenly vanishes

http://www.pahomepage.com/news/searching-for-answers-in-monroe-county-cold-case

Wednesday marks four years since a man suddenly disappeared in the Poconos. Investigators suspect foul play and believe there are people in the community that can help crack this cold case.

Police say they've received some valuable tips about Stephen Lepore of Tobyhanna. But they still need anyone with information to come forward and fill in some missing pieces.

About three weeks after he disappeared, police found Lepore's van abandoned on a dead end on Brown Street in Stroudsburg. It was a strange discovery, since investigators say he didn't frequent that area.

Detectives suspect foul play and believe there's someone in the community with answers.

"Missing persons cases generally don't last this long," says Chief Wagner.

Family Wants Answers in Man’s 2012 Disappearance

http://wnep.com/2016/08/18/family-wants-answers-in-mans-2012-disappearance/

Investigators in Monroe County believe they are close to solving a cold case involving a missing man from Tobyhanna.

Lepore's family and investigators are not giving up hope that they will close this case.

"It's been like going to a funeral every day. Like having an open cut wound and pouring vinegar on it. It doesn't go away," said Nicholas Lepore, Stephen's brother.

"We are at a point in the investigation right now where we are confident that there is some member of the community out there that can help us tie up the few loose ends that we still have in this case so that we can finally get some closure for Mr. Lepore's family," said Monroe County Assistant District Attorney Kimberly Metzgar.

Lepore was 55 when he disappeared, and at the time was 5 foot, 7 inches and 180 pounds, with brown/gray hair and brown eyes. Lepore was last seen wearing cargo shorts, a T-shirt and New Balance sneakers.

Lepore was last seen during the morning hours of Aug. 17, 2012, in Coolbaugh Township in Monroe County.

Lepore was driving a 2007 silver/grey Chevrolet Express van, which was found abandoned Sept. 6, 2012, in Stroudsburg. Authorities believe foul play may be involved in his disappearance.

Plea for Answers into Mysterious Disappearance of Monroe County Man

Detectives feel they are close to solving a seven-year-old cold case in Monroe County. Stephen Lepore went missing from his home in Tobyhanna on August 16th, 2012.

Detectives believe foul play was involved in Lepore's disappearance. Authorities said he was last seen driving a silver van but it was found three weeks later in an area of Stroudsburg Lepore rarely visited.

The sudden disappearance of Lepore is an active and ongoing investigation by the district attorney’s office along with the Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department with assistance from the Pennsylvania State Police. Based on the investigation up to this date, investigators feel that Lepore is the victim of foul play.

Detectives also feel that there are people in the community who have information about this case and are aware of the circumstances behind Lepore’s disappearance. Investigators are asking anyone with information about Lepore’s disappearance to come forward and bring this seven-year investigation to a successful end.

If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact Monroe County District Attorney Detective Craig Vanlouvender at 570-517-3152.

Details of Disappearance
Lepore was last seen leaving his residence on Belvedere Road in Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania at 8:30 a.m. on August 17, 2012. He said he was going to run some errands and would be back later. He never returned and has never been heard from again.

On September 6, his silver and gray 2007 Chevrolet Express van with the Pennsylvania license plate number YZN5888 was found on Brown Street, a dead-end street in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. He rarely visited that area. A photo of the van is posted with this case summary. Lepore's keys, wallet and a pile of paperwork he kept in the van and had been meaning to take care of were missing.

Lepore graduated from an automotive technical school. Although he was unemployed due to a prior back injury, he enjoyed fixing cars and doing favors for his neighbors. He had lived with a female friend in the Pocono Farms East area for eleven years. They shared their expenses, and she made sure he took his medication. He has a criminal history and served time for theft and weapons offenses.

A grand jury investigated Lepore's disappearance in 2013. Police were looking for a man known as "Corey Banks"; Lepore was seen with him prior to going missing. In 2015, Michael Anthony Cimato was charged with perjury and false swearing to authorities in connection with his testimony.

He had claimed he'd known Banks for over a decade but denied any family relationship with him. He said Banks came to Pennsylvania in the spring on 2012 to borrow money, and Cimato had last seen him when he dropped Banks off at a hotel in Dickson City, Pennsylvania.

Police later identified Banks as Kip Morgan, who was wanted in New York for parole violation in an attempted murder case, and in Illinois for armed robbery. Morgan's son is Cimato's nephew, meaning Cimato had lied when he said he had no family relationship with Morgan.

Morgan was arrested in Brooklyn, New York in May 2015. Authorities haven't identified either Cimato or Morgan as suspects in Lepore's disappearance, and the charges are only connected to Cimato's statements, not to the disappearance itself.

Since Lepore's disappearance, there hasn't been any activity on his cellular phone. He was close to his mother and it's uncharacteristic of him to leave without warning, and authorities believe foul play may have been involved in his case. His disappearance remains unsolved.

According to court paperwork, Brian Hewson told police that the remains of Lepore would be found in the backyard of the home in Wayne County.

The property belongs to Hewson's mother.

On Oct. 16, 2023, Hewson told police that Lepore's remains could be found at a residence along 95 Peet Road in Dreher Township, Wayne County. While searching, a human remains detection canine alerted to an area in the yard that was consistent with the area of Lepore's alleged remains provided by Hewson.

Hewson and Morgan gave investigators the necessary information to locate Lepore’s remains in Wayne County and confirmed the murder weapon was a .38 Caliber Taurus Revolver, stated law enforcement.

Officials stated no charges have been filed for the homicide of Lepore. The attorney’s office did note that Hewson is in custody in the state of Florida
