Michael Martin took out life insurance for father before murdering him, police allege

March 16, 2015

A son accused of murdering and partially decapitating his father in northern NSW had taken out life insurance in his father's name a short time before his death, Homicide Squad detectives allege.

Michael Martin, 25, will appear in Lismore Local Court on Monday charged with murdering his Michael Anthony Martin, 46, who was hacked to death in his unit in South Murwillumbah in June last year.

One week ago, Mr Martin jnr joined police to make a public plea for information, urging people to contact detectives if they had any information that could identify his father's killer.

During that appeal, he claimed that he was also present when his father was attacked, and that he was bound and gagged and forced to listen as his father was murdered

An earlier report....

Michael Martin Jr pleads for justice

8th Mar 2015

MICHAEL Martin junior was forced to listen to his dad being hacked to death.

On Sunday, he faced the media outside Murwillumbah Police Station, in a public plea for justice.

Mr Martin said the brutal murder of his father, in June last year, had shaken his family.

"My father did have a colourful past," Mr Martin said.

"But he didn't deserve that."

Michael Martin Sr was killed in his Quarry St, South Murwillumbah, home within a day of leaving hospital after a separate home invasion in April.

Thanks, Marley, for posting the link to this case.
First, Michael Martin was brutally attacked in April 2014 in Murwillumbah. Released from the hospital weeks later, the next day he was attacked again and murdered. His son, Michael Martin Jr., reported he had been taped up in the kitchen and forced to listen to the murder of his father. Martin Jr. made many impassioned pleas for information over the last year.
People around Murbah were pretty dismayed by the sheer violence of the home invasion. Today we learn it's---surprise!---all about a multi-million dollar insurance policy.
Sure there is a lot more to this story.
