PA - James Stuhlman, 51, slain while walking his dog, Philadelphia, 12 March 2015

Arrests have been made in the murder of a 51 year old Philadelphia father - James Stuhlman - who was killed in an attack by three youths while walking his dog.

Cops found the man still clutching the dog leash and a flashlight, NBC 10 reported. His faithful pet lay trembling next to his lifeless body.

The media are portraying the crime as a "robbery gone bad" but in fact nothing was stolen leading some to speculate that this was in fact a racial-bias hate crime.

What the Hell is wrong with kids? Do they just sit around all day smoking weed, playing grand theft auto, killing cops, Hookers and pedestrians. Stealing cars, assaulting people. And think there will be no consiquences doing the same thing in RL?

This kind of thing has been going on for quite a while and the media simply chooses to ignore it. People believe these are "random isolated cases" when in fact they are not random at all, the perps are always a group of youths that fit a certain description and the victim is typically a lone white male. If the perps are a gang of teen females they will target lone white or asian females.

15 years old. It makes me so sad and so angry. Love how that article blithely states they decided to rob someone, like it's a perfectly normal thing to do. And then, mysteriously, Mr Stuhlman is shot dead. No mention of a gun being in the hands of a 15 year old playing basketball. It just *appeared*, like an afterthought.

WHY were these boys armed? WHAT were they thinking? HOW is this normal behavior for them? (Normal as in that nonchalant decision to just rob someone, spontaneously.)

"Please don't shoot me" James Stuhlman pleaded for mercy before being shot dead.

This makes me sick to my stomach. Not just hyperbole, reading this story made me physically sick to my stomach. And the mental image of his dog trembling and in shock as he lay on his owner is heartbreaking.

Police say that the teens were playing basketball when they decided to rob someone. Initially, they targeted a different man walking his dog until they saw Stuhlman who was older and whose dog looked "weak."
"At one point he did plead for his life," said Clark. "He said, 'please don't shoot me, please don't shoot me,' and they still shot him one time."

Teen gets long jail term in killing of man walking dog in Overbrook

    http://www.philly.com/philly/news/20...Overbrook.html

A boy who was 15 when he killed a father walking a dog in Overbrook last year sat with his head buried in his arms as his victim's widow testified during an emotional hearing Thursday in Common Pleas Court.

Tyfine Hamilton, now 17, was sentenced at the hearing to 25 to 80 years in state prison. He pleaded guilty last week to third-degree murder, robbery, and related offenses in the death of James Stuhlman, 51, co-owner of a Media landscape-supply firm.

"There's not much to say - I took a special man from you and I'm sorry," Hamilton told Stuhlman's widow, Theresa. "I shouldn't have been out there that night, and I shouldn't have had a gun."
Following Hamilton's sentencing, Brandon Smith's attorney, Joshua E. Scarpello, said his client had declined a negotiated plea offer from the District Attorney's Office and would take his case to trial.

The 14-year-old was charged as a juvenile and his case was heard in Juvenile Court.

Officer tells of finding shooting victim with dog who wouldn't leave his side

    http://www.philly.com/philly/news/cr...-his-side.html

“I saw a man lying on his back, holding a flashlight in his left hand and a dog leash in his right,” Palmer said, his voice cracking. “The dog was just sitting by his side.”

The man was James Stuhlman, 51, husband and father and owner of a Delaware County landscaping company. The dog who wouldn’t leave his side was "Molly," the Stuhlmans' soft-coated wheaten terrier.

Palmer said he grabbed Stuhlman’s heavy winter coat and shook him several times, hoping to arouse him. Stuhlman, however, remained unconscious and unresponsive. It was only after Stuhlman was taken to a hospital, Palmer said, that he learned he had been shot to death.
Palmer’s description of the eerie scene that night marked Wednesday’s opening of testimony in the Philadelphia murder trial of 17-year-old Brandon Smith, one of a trio of teens who allegedly went from playing basketball to robbing and shooting Stuhlman as he walked his dog.

Smith is the only one of the three to go to trial. The 15-year-old shooter, Tyfine “Tavon” Hamilton, pleaded guilty last year to third-degree murder and was sentenced to 25 to 80 years in prison. The charges against a 14-year-old accomplice, who was not identified, were handled in juvenile court.

Teen guilty of 2nd-degree murder of Philly man walking dog

    http://www.philly.com/philly/news/cr...lking-dog.html

Brandon Smith didn’t hold the gun or pull the trigger.

But a Philadelphia jury on Friday found the 17-year-old guilty of second-degree murder in the 2015 attempted robbery and shooting of an Overbrook Farms man accosted by Smith and two other teens as he walked his dog.

The Common Pleas Court jury of eight men and four women took just three hours before finding Smith guilty of the murder charge, two counts of conspiracy, robbery, and possession of a weapon in the slaying of James Stuhlman, 51.

Smith showed no apparent emotion at the verdict, but his guardian, Victoria Zou, sobbed in the back of the gallery.

Theresa Stuhlman, the victim's widow, sat quietly on the other side of the courtroom with about 12 relatives and friends.

“Jim would have been 53 today,” Stuhlman said afterward. “I would like to thank the jury for their service and everyone involved in prosecuting this case.”

Judge Rose Marie DeFino-Nastasi set Smith’s sentencing for July 10.
