Authorities Search for Answers In Case of Otis Byrd, Mississippi Man Found Hanging

Federal and local authorities fanned out across parts of Mississippi on Friday trying to identify family and friends who can help “paint a picture” of how an African-American man ended up dead, hanging from a tree in Claiborne County.

“Everybody wants answers, and they want those quickly. We understand that,” the head of the FBI’s office in Jackson, Miss., told reporters. “[But] we’re going to hold off on coming to any conclusions until the facts take us to a definitive answer."

It’s just “too soon” to know whether the man committed suicide or was the victim of a brutal murder, FBI Special Agent-In-Charge Don Alway said. An autopsy report with preliminary results is expected sometime next week, but a gun was not involved, authorities said. Some 30 agents have been assigned to the case.

Is there any way he could have climbed the tree and then jumped off after securing the rope ?
Since he was on probation in a murder case, maybe he had to be 'silenced' ?

"It wasn't no chair, no ladder," Claiborne County Sheriff Marvin Lucas said, adding that it didn't appear Byrd had stood on something or had been restrained

"We all know the history of Mississippi, and I don't want anyone to feel like I got anything to hide," Lucas said.

Is Lucas referring to events that happened way back in the 50's or 60's ? If so, that was a very long time go and things are not the same these days; imo.

The man's identity has been confirmed as that of Otis Byrd, a 54-year-old ex-convict who lived just about 200 yards from the tree and had been declared missing by his family about two weeks ago

200 YARDS from the house and his family couldn't find him ?? Makes no sense at all --- unless they were estranged and just hadn't heard from him in two weeks. Still seems odd.

he had last been seen on camera leaving a casino.

Was anyone with him at the casino or followed him out ? Not that it would necessarily mean anything.

Exclusive: Mississippi sheriff sheds light on man found hanging

Byrd sometimes liked to gamble, said Sheriff Marvin Lucas, who has lived in rural Claiborne County, about an hour and a half drive from Jackson, Mississippi, all his life.

Lucas, who besides being sheriff is also the immediate past president of the local NAACP chapter, knew Byrd, whom he would sometimes see at services at Mount Burner Baptist Church. Lucas has known the church’s pastor, Ray Earl Coleman since eighth grade.

April 2015:

The national chair of the New Black Panther Party, Krystal Muhammad, led a Saturday afternoon community meeting on the courthouse steps.

"We know that Otis Byrd was lynched," she said. "We're not going to let it just be a cover-up. We went and looked at the scene ourselves. It's impossible that he lynched himself, and we're not going to let Mississippi get away with their old Mississippi ways."

Claiborne County Sheriff Marvin Lucas said people need patience.

"All I ask is that people let the authorities do their job and don't feed into that foolishness, that hearsay," he said.
