A Texas man arrested in China in 2007 for stealing state secrets is reported to have been released early from his eight-year sentence. Dr Xue Feng had been negotiating the sale of an oil-industry database on behalf of his US company when he was arrested. He is now back with his family in the US but has not spoken publicly.

The Dui Hua foundation, which campaigns for clemency and better treatment for detainees in China, said that the geologist had arrived home in the US city of Houston.

"Dui Hua is delighted that Dr Xue has finally been reunited with his family in America after a terrible ordeal," the San Francisco-based group's executive director, John Kamm, said in a press release.

ETA: Though living in Houston, Dr Xue is employed at the University of Chicago. He was working for a private consultancy in China.
President Obama had also questioned the issue of his detention. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/19/xue-feng-american-geologi_n_363521.html?
