Australia - Luke Shambrook, 11, Lake Eildon, Vic, 3 April 2015

11-year-old Luke Shambrook has been missing since Friday, when he wandered away from his parents at Candlebark Campground in the huge National Park near Lake Eildon in Victoria.

Luke has autism and is attracted to water. He may not know he is lost. A huge search is continuing, with volunteers even driving up from Melbourne to help.

Senior Sergeant Ralph Willingham from Victoria Police said he had never experienced such an outpouring of practical support.

"We're learning as we go, it's certainly a new experience for myself the level of commitment, the level that people have put themselves to it today," he said.

"We've got a system going, Victoria Police and the SES are actually nominating areas to be searched and recording what's been done and who's done it."
He is about 150cm (5 feet) with brown eyes and brown hair.

He was wearing a black beanie, a black windcheater, a scarf, dark grey tracksuit pants and grey boots. A beanie hat was found but it turned out to belong to someone else.

It's around 6.30pm Sunday in Victoria, Australia right now. Anyone know when it gets dark there?

I can't believe luke isn't being discussed! It's 7.04pm in Victoria now and its definitely dark. Daylights savings just ended this morning so it gets dark around 6pm now.

I was watching the news on win (country channel 9 I think) and it was the first I heard about luke. There was an update about a sighting. Apparently the witness has changed their story from seeing luke walking along a 4wd track to seeing him sitting on a log crying.

I only have my phone till I get home later so I can't do too much reading atm. Hoping there is a good explanation for why witness didn't stop for Luke and why story is changing

Video news at the link, although it's from earlier today. The police officer was so emotional he could hardly read the parents' statement.

I do hope this sighting is genuine. It was about 4km away across very rough terrain, from where Luke disappeared.

So some people in a car see a young boy sitting alone on a tree stump crying, and they drive on past him?

Well exactly. Hope they are not just looking for attention. His poor family are going through enough without a false sighting.

Thank you Zwiebel for starting this thread, I am so worried about Luke.

"We are turning our mind to other circumstances that may have resulted in his disappearance, but there is nothing at all to indicate that we need to go down that line," he said.

The search would remain a rescue effort, not a recovery mission, on Monday, he said, with the same level of officers assigned on the fourth day of the case.

"We've got to be realists, but we're positive, the family is positive that if there's any possibility, we're comfortable that he's still alive," he said.

A complicating factor in the search is Luke's autism. He is fascinated with water, has limited speech, and a habit of hiding. Police earlier explained how the boy may not want to be found or even know that he's lost.

I don't understand why the people in the car didn't stop, or maybe they did, I don't know. I'm so much wanting for the update that he has been found. The poor boy, how afraid must he feel, not to mention cold and hungry and thirsty My son has autism too and is close to Luke's age, I feel so much for his family. Fingers crossed for good news soon.

The bush land around Lake Eildon is difficult for an adult to traverse, let alone an 11 year old.
I remember when we visited there, one of two dogs ran away in the bush and it was incredibly hard to find him, even after searching for a couple of hours and he was all white!!
I have faith in the SES,amazing people,if anyone can find him, they will.Hopefully safe and sound!

Also, not saying the parents are involved in any way, shape or form but going camping at a huge lake when you know you're autistic son is drawn to water? Not a risk I would personally take, but again not victim blaming or anything just something I find hard to get my head around...

Because nowadays if you approach a child, you might be labeled a child kidnapper and get into trouble.
