Peach authorities increase patrol, form task force to catch accused rapist

FORT VALLEY -- Five break-ins in seven days in which two women were raped has prompted Peach County authorities to beef up patrols and form a task force.

Authorities think one man is responsible, and Peach County Sheriff Terry Deese said he thinks the man’s intent is not burglary but rape.

“In none of them, he’s actually broken in and taken stuff,” Deese said. “He’s getting the ladies out of bed or waking them up, so I think his motive is more toward the women than the property.”

Two of the break-ins occurred early Thursday....

...All the break-ins occurred within walking distance and near Fort Valley State University.... The first residential break-in was April 2 ....

...Anyone with any information is asked to contact Fort Valley police at 478-825-3384, the Peach County sheriff’s office at 478-825-8269, or call 911. ...

Three Fort Valley Burglaries All Include A Man With The Same Description

Fort Valley Police Chief Lawrence Spurgeon created a task force Thursday, including the Peach County Sheriffs Department, Fort Valley State University Campus Police Department and detectives from the Fort Valley Police Department. "Based upon the facts and the circumstances and the way that the crimes were committed, we believe it's the same suspect," Spurgeon says.

"We wanted to make sure this investigation was given top priority and it was given all our resources pointing in the same direction," added Spurgeon.

Articles say he is entering through unlocked doors. He is probably walking around at night trying doors to see which ones are open. Who knows he may walk in some homes and then leave if he doesn't see a good victim and they never knew he was there.

And the news stations sure are providing a detailed description of his clothing but not the guy himself.

Sonya, there were some descriptions earlier on:

...The suspect was described as a black man, standing 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 130 to 150 pounds. He has worn dark clothing and a red bandana over his face....

...Deese says the accused rapist is around 5 feet 8 inches tall with a slender build. In all the break-ins, he wore black clothing and a red bandana over his face. They believe he is in his early to mid-20s....

It may be that the description has varied a little from victim to victim, even though it's thought it's the same guy, because, well, people remember different things. Also, with the bandana disguise, I guess some of his facial features haven't been visible.

Uhoh -- another round of activity, sounds like same suspect.

Rash of recent incidents, including rape, spurs Peach task force meeting

...Peach County Sheriff Terry Deese said there had been no additional incidents for three weeks until Sunday, then seven break-ins - including the rape early Tuesday and an attempted rape Sunday.

The suspect description is the same and the method of operation is similar.

Victims, most sleeping, wake up to find the suspect in their homes. He is wearing dark clothing and his face is covered with a bandanna. He takes nothing.

In five of the most recent cases, the suspect fled after finding a man in the home. ...

For the 2nd day in a row, channel 13WMAZ in Macon really showcased the resurgence of the suspected serial intruder/rapist in Fort Valley, leading with the story on its news at 6 p.m. today even ahead of the year-anniversary update on the unsolved murders of Russell and Shirley Dermond in Putnam County. Here's the link to today's coverage, both links with video, I believe. At the first link, a former GBI special agent in charge who speaks has some interesting comments, IMO, about serial offenders, how they are easier to detect in small communities, why it is likely that the recent incidents are indeed the crimes of one person and not "copycats", and a few other topics.

Burglaries are often just a gateway crime to sexual assaults. Never take it lightly, women, if you suspect someone has been in your home whether you were there at the time or not. Report it, beef up the locks, have a few friends over for a week or two, or spend the night away for awhile.

A year ago already? Hard to believe that case has not been solved by DNA or other up-to-date forensic techniques. RIP, Mr. & Mrs. Dermond.

Nice article about victim assistance in this case, as well as a recap of the incidents and warnings to residents.

Hodac crime victim advocate helps women attacked by Fort Valley rapist

When a serial rapist attacked women in Fort Valley, Lillian Hadley-Small was among those who answered the call to help the victims....

...“I understand what it’s like, so I’m grateful to be one that can serve. ... It’s a passion of mine, and I’m thankful for the opportunity, and I know it’s only because I was once in their shoes.”

Hadley-Small was dispatched to the hospital for all four sexual assault incidents -- two rapes and two attempted rapes -- near the Fort Valley State University campus in April. The most recent rape was early Tuesday. ...

The suspect is described as a black man, 20 to 30 years old, standing 5 feet 6 inches tall to 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing between 130 and 150 pounds. A task force has been formed, and the GBI has been called in.

Authorities are advising residents to be extra vigilant. ...

Seems like this perp was just happily wandering about breaking into homes left and right while the occupants were THERE.

Apparently the majority of folks in Fort Valley have neither guns nor dogs in their homes. If they did then all h*ll would have broken lose during one of the many middle-of-the-night break-ins and this wouldn't have gone on for so long.

Okay, the perp was probably avoiding houses that had dogs, but he also felt very comfortable about the fact the folks inside those homes were unarmed.
