Malawi has announced it will evacuate its citizens from South Africa, following outbreaks of violence against foreigners there which have led to at least five deaths in Durban this week. The victims include a teenage child and one witness told media his friend was burnt alive. Hundreds of foreigners have fled to refugee camps for safety, while foreign-owned stores in Johannesburg are closing out of fear the violence will spread.

South Africa has become home for increasing numbers of people from bordering countries in the past 20 years since Apartheid ended, who are often blamed for economic and social problems in the country.

Malawi is the only country to say it will evacuate its citizens so far.

See that photo? One man has a deadly machete. Another man carries...a guitar.

Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini is being partly blamed for the violence, for a speech he made in March saying immigrants should 'pack their bags and go'. He's going to be charged with inciting hatred now, though he says he was misquoted.

Our South African posters will know for certain, but I think the underlying problem is that South Africa infrastructure is really creaking - people don't even seem to be able to rely on an electricity supply in some places and there are many allegations of corruption in high, medium and low places. Immigrants seem to be getting blamed for everything though. :(

Thousands have marched in Durban against the xenophobia, thankfully.

It is interesting (although not surprising in the least) to see what is happening in South Africa today.

As they say "what goes around comes around" .

In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the almost uninhabited tip of Africa was settled by white Europeans - "Afrikaners" - mostly Dutch settlers but also whites from the British Isles.

The white "Afrikaners" built the most civilized and successful country in Africa (at that time) and because of this success South Africa became a magnet for immigrants from the north who flooded in by the millions. In order to preserve the life-style that they had worked so hard to create - Afrikaners created "apart hoods" (Apartheid) to insulate themselves from these invaders from the north. The western world deemed that these "apart hoods" were "racist" and so they installed a former communist terrorist named Nelson Mandela as the new president of South Africa. (Mandela infamously sang about killing the white man ("Boer") in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5TD2HpXcH0 )

Of course it has been downhill for South Africa since then and today we have black South Africans savagely killing black immigrants from places like Somalia and Malawi. I would hate to be an Afrikaner living in this hell-hole today. I can't imagine what it must be like (especially young Afrikaner women who are living in what is today the rape capital of the world) .

That Dick Chenney, Ronald Reagan, and Margaret Thatcher declared that Mandela was a "communist terrorist" did make it so. Esp considering the majority of the western world did not and does not view Mandela, a nobel peace prize winner, in that light.

This is, of course, unsurprising, considering the U.S. continues to be embroiled in segregation related issues.

As for the present violence? Thanks to the whites who reified separateness between "tribes" with their quite violent "Apartheid" they've ensured it will take generations for these people to learn to live with each other in peace.

After the National Party gained power in South Africa in 1948, its all-white government immediately began enforcing existing policies of racial segregation under a system of legislation that it called apartheid. Under apartheid, nonwhite South Africans (a majority of the population) would be forced to live in separate areas from whites and use separate public facilities, and contact between the two groups would be limited. Despite strong and consistent opposition to apartheid within and outside of South Africa, its laws remained in effect for the better part of 50 years. In 1991, the government of President F.W. de Klerk began to repeal most of the legislation that provided the basis for apartheid.

BIRTH OF APARTHEID

Racial segregation and white supremacy had become central aspects of South African policy long before apartheid began. The controversial 1913 Land Act, passed three years after South Africa gained its independence, marked the beginning of territorial segregation by forcing black Africans to live in reserves and making it illegal for them to work as sharecroppers. Opponents of the Land Act formed the South African National Native Congress, which would become the African National Congress (ANC).

The Great Depression and World War II brought increasing economic woes to South Africa, and convinced the government to strengthen its policies of racial segregation. In 1948, the Afrikaner National Party won the general election under the slogan “apartheid” (literally “separateness”). Their goal was not only to separate South Africa’s white minority from its non-white majority, but also to separate non-whites from each other, and to divide black South Africans along tribal lines in order to decrease their political power.

APARTHEID BECOMES LAW

By 1950, the government had banned marriages between whites and people of other races, and prohibited sexual relations between black and white South Africans. The Population Registration Act of 1950 provided the basic framework for apartheid by classifying all South Africans by race, including Bantu (black Africans), Coloured (mixed race) and white. A fourth category, Asian (meaning Indian and Pakistani) was later added. In some cases, the legislation split families; parents could be classified as white, while their children were classified as colored.

This sounds familiar to me - the part about blaming everyone else?

They have never lived together in peace from what I've read and seen in recent years.

Didn't you know---EVERYWHERE else on the continent they get along so well together. It is just in South Africa, where the Anglo's messed things up, that there are problems.

As opposed to European tribes, which have such a history of peaceful cooperation. That we call European tribes "nations" hasn't made them any less deadly.

As a matter of act, European interference in Central and Northern Africa was even greater than in South Africa. Not so long ago, Britain, Belgium and France literally carved up Africa and South Asia, while Germany, Italy and Russia tried to claim their own shares. The U.S. took over from Britain in parts of the Middle East when Britain could no longer support an empire after WWII.

I'm not saying African nations never went to war before Europeans arrived. War, unfortunately, is a common human failing. But dividing Africa and the Near East based on convenience for Britain and France, rather than according to indigenous ethnicities, was a recipe for disaster.

You are so silly! There has never been genocide, corruption or power-mad leaders who maniacally cause mass destruction in European nations!

Good one! You almost had me, there. ;)

Oh. Wait........

My opinion of Mandela is not informed by what Dick Chenney, Ronald Reagan or Margaret Thatcher thought about the man. My opinion is informed by articles such as this which leave no doubt that Mandela was a communist terrorist responsible for the death's of countless white South Africans.

The tragedy of Nelson Mandela is that he lived to the ripe old age of 95!

The MK led a terrorist insurgency that included bombings of public places. It killed many, many more civilians than it did members of the regime’s security forces — copiously including women and children

That's what happens when you disenfranchise people within their own country, denied any peaceful means to effect change they turn to violence.

Kevin, you reel off racist tropes as if you have them typed out on 3x5 cards! (I'm not saying you are racist--I'm not going to judge you based on a post or two--just that you have bought into a lot of traditional racist arguments.)

Surely you know that a lot of nationalist groups called themselves "communist" in the 1950s and 1960s because it was the one sure way to get funding from the Soviet Union. As it has turned out--even in Viet Nam--the actual commitment to communism has been slight.

If Mandela's group caused a lot of "collateral damage", that is tragic, but no different from the S.A. Security Forces or the U.S. Army.

Your basic narrative that South Africa was uninhabited country, selflessly developed by Dutch settlers until it was overrun by unwanted settlers from neighboring nations is nonsense. Who do you think was working the land for the Boer conquerors? Where did S.A. get the labor force to work its mines and factories? (Hint: not from Holland. Under English rule, S.A. even imported thousands of South Asians because the demand for unskilled labor was so high!)

As shadowwraith's link above explains, the indigenous people around the Cape were pushed out when they refused to provide the Dutch with the supplies needed for long voyages between the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies. Over succeeding centuries, those same aboriginals were pushed further back as Dutch, English and German invaders settled the Bush Country (interior). But through it all, slaves were imported from other African and Asian countries; they didn't show up suddenly to steal a bit of the "South African miracle".

407 Zimbabwean refugees have arrived back home, with horrific tales of violence inflicted upon them in South Africa. One man says his brother was beheaded in front of his eyes in Durban and there's a description of another killing that is gruesome. The deaths have not bèen confirmed by police.

The returnees say the real death toll is much higher than authorities are making public.

It's estimated around 2000 Zimbabweans are trying to flee South Africa. This group had a four-hour delay on the SA side of the border, before being allowed back in to Zim.
