A very detailed and nicely written article:

"What happened to Roberta? 26 years later, her sisters still don’t know"

In the early 2000s, Carol and another sister provided DNA samples, in case Roberta’s DNA or remains were found on the pig farm of now-convicted serial killer Robert Pickton. Pickton is currently serving a life sentence for the second-degree murder of six women. The remains or DNA of dozens of other women were found on his farm. However, neither Roberta’s remains nor her DNA were found or identified on the Pickton farm.

Carol has her own suspicions. She believes a man who committed suicide in 2005—a suspected serial killer – might be responsible for Roberta’s disappearance. She was, for a while, her own detective: clipping stories out of the newspaper, paying attention to people’s jaw lines, searching and searching the internet. But she has no proof.

“Terry Arnold had mentioned in the jail that he was last seen with her,” Verl said.

Arnold was a convicted murderer who became the prime suspect in the death of Barbara Stoppel in Winnipeg in 1981.

Around the same time, he was also suspected in an Alberta death the year before Roberta disappeared.

“He went to take them to where [Roberta’s] body was, and it was moved, so they couldn’t,** they couldn’t [continue],” Verl said.

Arnold later committed suicide, denying involvement in the Stoppel killing

Chilliwack BC to Surrey BC is about 80km (approx 50 miles) by and she was on foot! And at 8pm!!

Why was she trying to hitchhike back home? What happened with her group of friends that she didn't want to stay the night camping as planned?

And why were her friends happy to let her go off at 8pm, knowing she'd only have about an hour of daylight left?

All very odd.....

''Cultus Lake is where Roberta had been camping at a three- or four-day end-of-the-year gathering put on by the company she worked for. Her cousin, Robie Brown, was there too. Carol said Roberta had been plagued with rheumatic fever when she was a youngster, which affected her from then on. On August 24, Roberta felt sick and wanted to go home to Surrey, but couldn’t get a ride. “So she went on foot,” Carol said, “and I believe she was headed to Chilliwack to catch a bus to Surrey; she left at 8 p.m. She took off walking down the mountain road.”

''Carol learned that Robie begged Roberta not to go that evening. “She had a boyfriend who lived in Surrey and she called him from a phone booth at Cultus Lake,” Carol said. “He missed the call. And then Roberta journeyed on.”

“Somewhere at that point – in the investigation showed a witness saw a lady walking along the highway who matched the description of Roberta. Some guy in a red sports car stopped and Roberta was talking to him (the witness reported). She looked like she backed away from the vehicle – like she was scared. And that’s the last time anybody ever saw her.”

Carol continued doing research about circumstances that surrounded Roberta’s disappearance. She and her family consulted psychics for answers, and on a few occasions, were directed to specific areas. Carol remembers going to a site in the Chilliwack area. She started walking toward the site noted by a psychic when her brother-in-law stopped her. “He said, ‘I don’t feel right. Don’t go.’ I felt pretty uneasy, like I found the place.” Carol turned around.
“Over the years I went to more psychics,” Carol said, and explained they directed Roberta’s family to an area along the Chilliwack River Road and another time, to an army base, also along the Chilliwack River Road.''

This is all i could grab from the pay-walled site, noting this 1988 incident in LA. fwiw. rbbm.

I am surprised that in Canada a first world country does not take care of the aboriginals... it is like that road in Canada "the highway of tears" there are always young women murdered, raped, kidnapped etc... I don't know if he is a guy who hates women or just a serial killer who only kills indigenous women... but I think she was murdered near where she was last seen... there is a lot of information about her that's good there's always the possibility that stay alive but it's been many years...
either way
rest in peace
