Australia - Carnival Cruise ship with 2,500 aboard hit by wild weather in Sydney

Ferocious storms ripping across New South Wales in Australia have led to the closing of Sydney Harbour, with a cruise ship carrying 2,500 people stranded on the stormy seas outside. The harbour master, Cpt Phillip Holliday, says it's the first time he's been forced to close the harbour but although it is unpleasant for the passengers out in the heavy swell, it is far safer than trying to make it to port in the current conditions.

Passengers have been using social media to share photos and videos of the high waves battering the ship, the Carnival Spirit. They were supposed to disembark this morning after a 12-day cruise but may be stranded for another 48 hours.

On land in NSW, storms have caused heavy flooding and toppled trees and power lines. 215,000 are without power and emergency services have received thousands of calls for help. Three people have died in Dungog, although authorities haven't yet been able to confirm how they died or their identities.

Carnival Spirit has finally docked safely. Passengers say they were 'down in the dumps' what with all the crashing waves and smashing crockery, but have praised the actions of the crew.

Think it's about 10am Thursday in Sydney now? So hoping everyone stays safe and there aren't anymore deaths or missing.

The death toll is 8 at the moment. About 2000 people are still without power - my uncle is one of them. He lost power on Sunday and is hoping to get it reconnected on the weekend.
