CA - Homeland Security to open Silicon Valley office

SAN FRANCISCO The Department of Homeland Security plans to open a satellite office in Silicon Valley, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson told a crowded hall at RSA, the world's largest computer security conference, on Tuesday.

It's also pushing back against moves by tech companies to digitally encode computer traffic to protect it from prying eyes.

Johnson also said the President has tasked him with encouraging “private Information Sharing and Analysis Organizations.” Broadly speaking, these are all efforts aimed at getting private industry to share critical information about infosec threats with the government. So this new DHS outpost is part of a much larger agenda to bring Silicon Valley companies into the national security fold.

The gizmodo article is the more interesting and informative of the two, imo.

"Johnson also emphasized that DHS has a specific agenda, which is to push back on the call for encryption thats come from many tech companies, including Yahoo and Google.

Johnson asked the audience at RSA to help the government have more access to unencrypted data to help them stop threats to our digital infrastructure. ..."

In other words, the encryption makes it too difficult for the government to spy on the common man.
