Los Angeles woman accuses Vegas police, officer of excessive force in 2014 nightclub arrest

LAS VEGAS – A 21-year-old Los Angeles fashion designer said Thursday she's suing Las Vegas police and a uniformed officer she says smashed her face into a marble and glass table during her arrest in the lobby of a Strip casino resort.

Her lawsuit alleging civil rights violations and excessive force was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Las Vegas. It seeks at least $4 million in damages from the officer and the Police Department.

The lawsuit concedes that Mason punched the officer, Shawn Izzo, while she was being handcuffed, and notes that Mason is African-American and Izzo is white.

"I just feel as if the color of my skin was different, this wouldn't have happened to me," Mason told reporters.

Bryson released a compact disc with 6 minutes, 24 seconds of silent color video clips showing some parts of Mason's arrest.

It shows Mason variously compliant and combative while Izzo, in uniform, and a female security guard drag Mason away from other scuffles. At one point, Izzo holds Mason's head in the crook of his arm on the marble hotel lobby floor.

Mason acknowledged that she was 20 when she was in the club, but said she had "only two drinks" before the altercation outside.

I'm interested to hear what WS posters think about this incident, and the civil lawsuit.

So she is underage, drinking in the club, goes outside, gets in a fight with others, a female security guard tries to break up the fight by detaining Mason's friend, and Mason GRABS the female security officer by the back and begins assaulting her? Then when the cops arrive, one grabs her from behind, she breaks away, punches him in the face, and he is in FULL UNIFORM when she punches him in the face, yet she says she did not know it was a cop...OK.....

She is a JOKE to be suing...but I am not surprised.

"After she broke free from his grip, she punched him. She said she had no idea he was a police officer because he hadn't identified himself to her."

Ummm....the police uniform should have given her a clue.

IMO, this very foolish and lucky young woman should just go buy herself some concealer for her chin scars, and consider herself very, very lucky she came out of this with just a few stitches and dropped criminal charges. She deserved every inch of the criminal charges, IMO.

IMO, this is a clear case of a young woman with $$ signs in her eyes, glomming onto the recent hate war on police officers. She has very high entitlement titers, IMO-- and quit with the crocodile tears, please. One of the articles also mentions that one of her parents is a minor local celebrity.

She should be ashamed of herself, IMO. But then, I'd guess anyone who would file this kind of a lawsuit, after her outrageous behavior, is incapable of understanding what shame is.

The color of her skin had absolutely nothing to do with why the security and police officers were responding to the brawl, and why they employed the measures they took to subdue her and arrest her, IMO. I hope she never sees a dime from this frivolous lawsuit, and that it's dismissed promptly. Send this whiny, self-absorbed fashion designer home. Maybe she could design a cloak of humility to wear.

She might want to watch the video, looks like she bites the officers arm around the 50 sec or so.

I'm not seeing excessive force. I'm seeing a woman trying to take a ride on the gravy train, due to recent LEO involved cases. Imo, her behavior and subsequent lawsuit is an insult to people of color.

I say there will be alot more cases wanting to ride the gravy train coming.

In Metro's statement, the police department said it came to its conclusion after viewing "unadulterated" and "unedited" security footage of the incident inside the Mirage Hotel and Casino on Aug. 16, 2014.

"Our officer used an appropriate amount of force to resolve the situation and take the suspect into custody," Metro said, in part. "The officer was found to have been operating within the guidelines of policy and the internal investigation was subsequently closed."

"The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department receives dozens of lawsuits each year, and as responsible stewards of our taxpayer funded budget, we will continue to aggressively defend lawful actions by our employees. Due to pending litigation, no further comments or statements will be released regarding this incident."
