The landmark 19th century Dharahara tower (built in 1832 as a military watchtower) has been reduced to rubble. No word on how many causalities as a result of it's collapse. RT.com is reporting "dozens trapped"

Nepal earthquake: death toll exceeds 1,000 people

More than 1,000 people have been reported dead after a huge 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal

18 climbers were found dead on Mount Everest after the tremor triggered an avalanche. Many more are trapped.

36 people have also been reported dead India, 12 in China, four in Bangladesh and six in Tibet.

There were a lot of Australians visiting Nepal, several of them climbing. A lot are still missing. I suspect many others from countries across the world will have been caught up in this catastrophe.

Google is helping to connect survivors with worried relatives after a catastrophic earthquake rocked Nepal Saturday morning.

The Person Finder tool, a missing persons database supplied with crowdsourced data, is intended to help people find those who were affected by the earthquake.

This is so sad. I've got one of my friends thru my church who lives in Nepal. She posted to her Facebook that the destruction is devastating. I also have another friend who's husband flew out just hours before the quake it. He just did the climb to the Everest base camp. He was lucky.

Information Matt Moniz is tweeting from Mnt Everest is being quoted as a news source by BBC Radio so I believe it is very reliable. 13 hrs ago he said the situation was critical up there, with several severe head injuries to climbers caught in the avalanche the earthquake triggered. Helicopters have just managed to land (according to Matt and the NY Times).

The BBC (via Radio) said officials and SAR experts expect the death toll to rise to 10,000.
