AL - 5 dead, 1 missing as storm hits regatta in Mobile

A storm that hit the Dauphin Island sailing regatta in Mobile, Alabama Saturday left one person dead, at least four missing and rescuers scrambling to save around 100 boats. It's estimated around 200 people were on the water at the time.

Dauphin Island Mayor Jeff Collier says boats over a wide area were affected.

Search efforts continued into the night.

This report says five now reported missing, but not every boat affected by the squall was taking part in the regatta, so officials need to know if there's anyone who went out sailing or fishing around Mobile Bay and hasn't made it home.

Coastguards have set up a temporary number for people to call at 251-441-6602 or 251-441-6920.

3000 square miles of ocean have been searched for the four missing sailors but bad weather has halted recovery efforts. Sadly, it is almost certainly a recovery rather than rescue operation now.

The wording of the article suggests authorities do know the names of the missing people, but they haven't been released.

A body was found around 1pm Tuesday. No id, but the Coast Guard has confirmed that the remains of 27-year-old Kris Beall and 72-year-old Robert Delaney have been recovered.

    Three people remain missing.

A vigil for one of the missing, 17-year-old Baker High School student Adam Clark, was held at St. Piux X Church on Monday.

Another of the missing, Robert Thomas, was identified as being a crew member of the vessel None9, which was captained by victim Delaney.
Searches have now been switched to the shoreline.

Five bodies have now been recovered and only one person remains missing now - 71-year-old Jimmie Charles 'JC' Brown.

The Coast Guard are going to 'move into the background' and let Alabama LE lead the search for him.

As sad as this story is, the South had been expecting these storms for at least 3-4 days before they hit Alabama. I am still having trouble figuring out why experienced sailors were out on the water, lacking life vests, and not heeding warnings from the NWS. RIP to the deceased and prayers for the families and friends of all involved.

Unless I provide a link or refer to a specific link, all my ramblings are theories, speculation, scenarios based on what info is available and my own unique life experiences.

A cruel wind: How the 2015 Dauphin Island Regatta unfolded
    5/3/2015
    http://www.al.com/news/mobile/index....2015_daup.html

The 26-foot Scoundrel had finished the race and was headed north when it was "knocked horizontal," said owner Lee Creekmore. He went into the water to let down the sails, and as he did so, the boat righted itself. But crewmember Kris Beall was trailing behind, holding onto a line.

Creekmore, describing the mishap two days later, said he almost got dragged into the water trying to pull Beall toward him. Then Beall disappeared. In the squall, there was no hope of turning upwind to retrieve him. His body was found late Saturday.

According to Maloy, based on evidence, it appears the missing boater would have moved southwest into the Gulf of Mexico, which is out of the search area. 71-year-old Jimmie Charles "J.C." Brown is the last of the boaters that went missing April 25.

The Mobile County Sheriff's Office Flotilla Unit is still involved in the search. Two boats and two planes will continue to search until further notice.
Jimmie Charles Brown, Robert Thomas, William Glenn Massey, Robert Delaney, Adam Clark and Kris Beall.
