BOGOTA(Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Paraguay's decision to deny a pregnant 10-year-old girl an abortion after she was allegedly raped by her stepfather has sparked a national debate over the country's strict abortion law.

Paraguay's health minister recently refused a request from the girl's mother to terminate the pregnancy, but rights groups say the decision could put the girl's health at risk and is "tantamount to torture".

The girl, who cannot be named, is more than five months pregnant.

In Paraguay, abortion is only allowed when the mother's life is in danger. In all other cases the procedure is a crime.

The girl's mother has been imprisoned, charged with breaching her duty of care.

Health Minister Antonio Barrios told Paraguay's ABC newspaper that doctors and a psychologist were providing care to the girl.

Unfortunately, either way there is no winner in this case....

What is shocking is they have imprisoned the mother for breach of care, when later in the article it states she had reported the abuse last year and nothing was done....

The stepfather is on the run. This is one of the times that vigilante justice should prevail.

This poor girl. Going through an unwanted pregnancy all alone :(

Not allowing an abortion is ridiculous. She was a victim of a rape and she is TEN YEARS OLD! A fetus is not equal to a child and they don't seem to be taking into consideration the emotional damage this could cause. Are they going to make her go through labor? Or do a c-section and leave a physical scar as well as an emotional one? What if this damages her so much that she is unable to bear children later on in life, when she is ready?

There is a very easy answer to this, but politicians care more about the unborn child than the child who is alive and pregnant.

totally agree with you Stephanie 150% this poor child will be 10x worse if she survives it, I suppose she will if she was able to get pregnant at this age, but her childhood was over way too early :(
