An unidentified person in an apartment in Braamfontein, Johannesberg, saw what appeared to be staff hosing down chicken pieces on a filthy concrete floor in the backyard of a KFC. They snapped some photos which were shared on Facebook, went viral and caused outrage.

The store is now closed but is expected to reopen. In this article, the company gave this explanation:

This is the reason the company gave to Facebook followers regarding the washing of chicken intended for disposal:

The franchisee required the team to discard product before breading it to avoid breading waste. The team had some waste that they had discarded with breading on it and they were washing it off to hide it from management.

But in this article, this explanation was given:

Friday, KFC Africa managing director Doug Smart..was quoted as saying: “We’ve confirmed that the product (pictured) was never going to be served. This store had developed the practice of collecting stock that is never going to be sold (but kept) in (the) freezer (and) had to be thawed.”

Smart said the chicken had been “washed”, marked for disposal and labelled: “On hold. Do not use.”

“(The) bad thing is how they decided to take apart this block of frozen chicken – but it was never going to be sold,” he said.
