UK - Emile Cilliers accused of tampering w/ wife's parachute, Wiltshire, 5 April 2015

It's been revealed the husband of British woman Victoria Cilliers, who sustained serious injuries when her parachute failed to open during a jump in Salisbury, UK, on April 5th, was the man arrested last week, on suspicion of trying to murder her

South African-born Emile Cilliers, 35, was questioned by police last week after his wife Victoria plummeted more than 1,200 metres (4,000ft) to the ground.

The experienced 39-year-old parachutist “miraculously survived” but sustained multiple serious injuries following what should have been a routine jump above Salisbury Plain on 5 April, Wiltshire police said.
Emile Cilliers is South African born but serves in the British Army as an instructor in the physical training corps. The parachute club where the jump was made alerted police because not only did Victoria's main parachute fail but her reserve only partially opened too, and that's very rare. She's now recovering at home. Emile has been released on bail.

Police say they are still searching for missing 'slinks' or soft links, from Victoria's parachute.

Feel very sorry for the victim. The mail printed a copy of a FB post she made last week.

The Mail on Sunday has been passed a posting she made on Facebook which read: ‘Where do I go from here? I have no idea where to start. It is a hundred times harder as I am housebound and cannot care independently for my children due to my current injuries. I have had a lot of support from the police/medical chain/social work but I really need friends too.

Airfield sources told the Mail on Sunday Mrs Cilliers had not been able to use her personal parachute on the day because it had not been unpacked and inspected within the last six months, as rules require, so borrowed a parachute from the stores at Netheravon.

Her husband signed out an Army parachute from the storeroom at the airfield on his wife's behalf on Easter Saturday, the day before the incident, according to sources, though police have not confirmed this.

I read this earlier - madness!! Something's definitely amiss (and not just the slinks), it will be interesting to see what comes of this one but I imagine they're both shocked that she's still alive....

This is the most recent I do I could found. There was no info on sentencing or a plea deal that I could find, if the UK has such things.

Unless I provide a link or refer to a specific link, all my ramblings are theories, speculation, scenarios based on what info is available and my own unique life experiences.

Christopher Hill, who is representing Mr Cilliers, indicated his client would plead not guilty to all charges.

Mr Cilliers, who gave his address as being at a military barracks in Aldershot, Hampshire, is due to appear before Winchester Crown Court on 18 November.

“You will attend on Friday, November 18 for the first preliminary hearing.”
Sgt Cilliers was working as an instructor with the Royal Army Physical Training Corps attached to the Royal Marines at the time of his arrest in May.
He was bailed on the condition he not enter Wiltshire unless to attend a court hearing or meet his solicitor. Neither must he contact his wife directly or indirectly.

Judge Keith Cutler, the recorder of Winchester, adjourned the case for a date to be fixed and released Cilliers on bail.
“It is likely to be a trial of five weeks’ length, perhaps in May or the summer part of next year,” the judge told the defendant.

    ....

There’s likely to be a further hearing in probably February or March for a further administrative-type hearing.”

Date set for trial of Army sergeant accused of wife's parachute murder bid

    http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/dat...-bid-1-7829728

Emile Cilliers has pleaded not guilty to three charges in relation to his wife, Victoria Cilliers, 40, who suffered multiple serious injuries at Netheravon airfield on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire on April 5 2015.

During a preliminary hearing at Winchester Crown Court, the judge, Mrs Justice May, postponed the start of the trial to October 3 from the previous date of June 7 to enable expert witness reports to be prepared for the defence.

Cilliers, of Aldershot, Hampshire, denies two charges of attempting to murder his wife.

    ■ Emile Cilliers, a sergeant in the British Army, will appear in court charged with the attempted murder of his wife Victoria after her main parachute failed to open during a 4,000ft skydive. Victoria suffered serious injuries after hitting the ground near Salisbury Plain on April 5, 2015, with her reserve canopy having only partially deployed. Cilliers also faces a second attempted murder charge after allegedly tampering with a gas fitting at his wife’s home the week before the accident.

Before the incident Mrs Cilliers told friends that Emile had moved out of the home they shared in Amesbury, Wiltshire, with their children, Lily, three, and newborn son Ethan.

The couple wed in South Africa in 2011.

Cilliers also denies a charge of damaging a gas fitting belonging to his wife.

Unless he had the daughter and son with him when the gas was (allegedly) tampered with, it would be attempted murder on three lives I would have thought.
