NM - 2 police officers & 3 more dead in shooting spree, 18 Aug 2005 *Insanity*

Those who know the 48-year-old Albuquerque man accused of killing four people in a single day say he was so polite and kind that even his facial piercings and commando-style clothing did not intimidate most people much.

They also say the man they knew began to change a few months ago when family members became concerned that he had stopped taking his medication for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, according to police reports.

On Thursday, police allege, he changed so completely that he took four lives, including those of two Albuquerque policemen, in the space of a few hours.

A Metro Court criminal complaint alleges that Hyde loaded a shotgun and a handgun on his black spray-painted motorcycle, gunning down two Rider Valley Motorcycles employees on East Central Avenue that evening and Officers Michael King and Richard Smith outside an apartment just off Central Avenue Southeast that night.

Hyde is also being investigated as a suspect in the fatal shooting of a Department of Transportation employee near Central Avenue Southwest early Thursday morning.

Why is it that when a custodial parent fails to provide for a child it is called neglect and is a criminal matter. But when a non custodial parent fails to provide it is called failure to support and is a civil matter?

Judge Daniel Ranczyk on Saturday morning oversaw the arraignment for the man accused of killing at least four people, including two Albuquerque Police officers, on Thursday.
Rosenfield asked that Hyde be allowed to address the court through the video arraignment system from the Metropolitan Detention Center. Hyde calmly told Judge Ranczyk he was disappointed that we was not able to groom himself appropriately for his court appearance.
He said he did not like appearing before the court dressed up in a red inmate's jumpsuit, "looking like Elvis Presley," and not having been able to groom his hair.
    "I look ridiculous," he said.
Through his lawyer, Hyde pleaded not-guilty to all charges.

5 murders including 2 police officers/ suspect off his meds

Police have released the dispatch records from night veteran officers Michael King and Richard Smith were killed while attempting to pick Hyde up on a physician's request for a mental evaluation.

Police Chief Ray Schultz said Smith and King were ambushed at about 10:15 p.m. Aug. 18 when they arrived 1521 Gold Avenue S.E.

But dispatch records released Friday show the officers told dispatchers they were at Hyde's home at about 9:45 p.m.

Police spokesman John Walsh said the officers made contact and spoke with Hyde for "several minutes" before Smith radioed to dispatch at 10:15 that King had been shot.

In addition to two murder counts stemming from the officers' deaths, Hyde also is charged with three other murders, an armed robbery and child abuse related to the shooting deaths earlier the same day of a state Department of Transportation worker, Benny Lopez, 54, and two motorcycle shop employees, Garrett Iversen, 22, and David Fisher, 17.

Schultz has said Smith and King did not know Hyde was a suspect in the day's three other killings when they were dispatched to Hyde's home at 9:15 that Thursday night.

About 6:30 p.m., Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital at 8300 Constitution N.E. was put on security alert, and officers called after a man matching Hyde's description threatened to kill hospital employees.

According to investigation documents, the officers knew Hyde had violent tendencies and access to knives and guns. They knew Hyde suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and was off his medication.

Detective said that a gun in Hyde's possession, an antique British military revolver, was used in all five killings that day, according to analysis of marks of the bullets found at each of the scenes.

Five people were slain all on the same day, and family members of the accused killer were targeted by investigators.

The Hyde family decided to speak out, though, because they're afraid they will be linked to the handful of homicides John Hyde is accused of committing.

In court documents, a witness said someone in the Hyde family knew about a murder plot.

"Mental illness is a serious problem that we have to deal with," said Robert Hyde . "I don't want to invalidate anyone's feelings, but we are going through a really hard time too." He said since the his brother's arrest, life had changed drastically. Robert Hyde has not spoken to his brother. Instead, he's been cooperating fully with the Albuquerque Police Department.

The family of a man accused of killing two Albuquerque police officers and three others said they repeatedly sought help from his mental health provider as they watched his condition deteriorate.

"You cannot believe the frustration," said Robert Hyde, John's brother. "We did not know what to do."

Hyde is accused of fatally shooting Officers Michael King and Richard Smith on Aug. 18 as they tried to pick him up for a mental health evaluation. Earlier in the day, Hyde allegedly shot and killed two motorcycle shop employees, David Fisher and Garrett Iversen, both of Albuquerque, and Ben Lopez of Albuquerque, a Transportation Department employee.

    From August 2007:

    http://www.abqjournal.com/news/aphyde08-21-07.htm

A man accused of killing five people, including two Albuquerque police officers, in a single day two years ago has been committed to a state mental institution for 179 years.

State District Judge Pat Murdoch made his decision Tuesday after hearing nearly two days of testimony in a hearing that was meant to determine whether John Hyde remained a danger and whether there was enough evidence to convict him of the August 2005 crimes.
