Those who know the 48-year-old Albuquerque man accused of killing four people in a single day say he was so polite and kind that even his facial piercings and commando-style clothing did not intimidate most people much.
They also say the man they knew began to change a few months ago when family members became concerned that he had stopped taking his medication for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, according to police reports.
On Thursday, police allege, he changed so completely that he took four lives, including those of two Albuquerque policemen, in the space of a few hours.
A Metro Court criminal complaint alleges that Hyde loaded a shotgun and a handgun on his black spray-painted motorcycle, gunning down two Rider Valley Motorcycles employees on East Central Avenue that evening and Officers Michael King and Richard Smith outside an apartment just off Central Avenue Southeast that night.
Hyde is also being investigated as a suspect in the fatal shooting of a Department of Transportation employee near Central Avenue Southwest early Thursday morning.
