NC - Shyheim Paylor, 22 mos, shot to death, Hurdle Mills, 17 Aug 2005

Pressing hard Friday night, the Person County Sheriff's Department and the State Bureau of Investigation appeared to be close to making an arrest of the person or persons responsible for the Wednesday shooting death of a 22-month-old child just south of Roxboro.

The child’s murder sparked widespread media attention and prompted Gov. Mike Easley to post a $5,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators.

The shooting under investigation left 22-month-old Shyheim Theodore Paylor dead and his father, 27-year-old Ray Anthony Paylor in a Chapel Hill hospital in serious condition with non-life threatening injuries.

Information sheriff's officers have released thus far indicate that two or three men were reportedly attempting to invade the Paylor home, a singlewide trailer at 264 Colonial Estates Rd., when the deadly shooting took place at approximately 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Oakley said it is possible that a single bullet killed Shyheim Paylor and also injured Ray Paylor.

Following the shooting, Barbara Ann Brooks, the grandmother of Shyheim Paylor, reportedly called 911 for assistance. Brooks and Tamila Ragland, the child’s mother, both were in the home at the time of the shooting and both escaped injury.

Chief Deputy Joy Hill identifies the three as 19-year-old Terrell Calloway, 22-year-old Floyd Mims and 18-year-old Robert Lyon.

Person County Sheriff Dennis Oakley says Shyheim Paylor sitting on his father's lap in the living room. when the intruders entered and opened fire with either a rifle or a handgun.

The toddler's father, Ray Anthony Paylor, is at U-N-C Hospitals are undergoing surgery.

4th man charged in death of toddler

In Roxboro, a 4th man has been charged in the death of a 2-year-old boy who was fatally shot while in his father's arms.

Shidee Talley, 21, of Roxboro, allegedly led 3 burglary accomplices to the victims' home. He was charged with conspiracy to commit 1st-degree burglary and was being held Thursday on $5 million bond.

District Attorney Joel Brewer said he hasn't decided whether to pursue the death penalty against other defendants in the case.

Terrell Jerome Calloway, 19; Floyd Mims Jr., 22; and Robert J. Lyon, 18 - all of Durham - are charged with 1st-degree murder and 1st-degree burglary.

Calloway and Lyon also have been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict bodily injury, and Brewer said more charges are possible.

Shyheim Paylor was shot to death Aug. 17 during a home invasion in rural Hurdle Mills. His father, Ray Anthony Paylor, 27, was wounded.
