    Details of Disappearance
England was last seen in Salida, Colorado on June 12, 1980. That day she dropped her children off at a babysitter's, went to a doctor's appointment, then met with another individual. She has never been heard from again. Few details are available in England's case, but foul play is suspected in her disappearance and investigators believe she is deceased.

New Article: "Technology sparks renewed interest in cold case"

Over the years the hope, especially around the anniversary of her disappearance, was that her body might be discovered and bring closure to her family, but so far that hasn’t happened. That hope remains and with the advent of the new technology and a cold case investigator, it is even stronger.

Beverly England was described by friends as a quiet young woman who enjoyed her hobby of making and furnishing Victorian dollhouses. She had worked as a waitress and as a bookkeeper. Her last job was at the Homestake Mine.

“It wasn’t like her to leave her children,” Smith said in a 1997 interview. “She loved her kids. The night before we had talked about buying material to make school clothes for Bricia, who was starting kindergarten in the fall.”

Bones confirmed to be missing Salida woman who disappeared in 1980
Beverly England's bones were found in the Mount Shavano area in 1992

Through advanced DNA technology, law enforcement was able to determine last month that bones found in 1992 matched England's DNA.

Salida Police Department and the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office have reopened the investigation, and the site near the bones is now being excavated for evidence.

Several key items of evidence have been recovered which led investigators to believe that Beverly England died as the victim of foul play.

Investigation reopens into woman's 1980 disappearance

Arlene Shovald, Special to The Mail

    [...]
A press release from the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office and the Salida Police Department released Tuesday stated that foul play was suspected in England’s disappearance.

“We’re into a full investigation now,” Sheriff John Spezze said. “We’re taking it day to day, and we just don’t know where we’re going from here. We may have lost some evidence with the results of time and Mother Nature, but with the new technology that is available now, we may also have gained some. We hope to get enough to get a conclusion.”

Asked if he had any suspects, Spezze said, “We have people of interest – some people we’re taking a very serious look at.”

    [...]
Beverly England, 32, disappeared on June 12, 1980. At that time Salida was gearing up for the annual FIBArk festival, and the Arkansas River was at the highest level in recorded history. The Wellsville Gauging Station reported the river at 8.01 feet at 11 a.m. that day. An official flood warning had been posted the previous evening.

England left her children, Bricia, 5, and Cayl, 8, with a friend “for a couple of hours” that morning. She never returned, which friends said was very unlike her.

At 4 p.m. when she still hadn’t come back for the children, her husband, Dale, picked them up and set out looking for her. At 8 p.m. he found her car at Riverside Park. Her shoes and purse were inside.

Regarding the fact that it is reported that the river was very high, and her shoes were left in the car - is one of the working theories that she went to the river to walk along the embankment, or into shallow sides of the river, and drowned?

    A few more details here

    http://www.westword.com/news/beverly...ishing-7221051

On June 12, the newspaper reports, Salida was preparing for an annual whitewater festival called FIBArk — and with the Arkansas River running at the highest point recorded up until that time, flooding concerns were on everyone's mind.

England, meanwhile, asked a friend to watch her kids — Bricia, five, and Cayl, eight — for a couple of hours that morning so that she could meet a woman not named in the Mail piece.

This request didn't seem unusual, but England's tardiness was. When she hadn't returned by 4 p.m., her husband, Dale, picked up the kids. A few hours later, he set out looking for Beverly and found her car abandoned at a nearby park, with her shoes and purse inside.

At first, it was feared that England had drowned. As noted, the river was about to burst its banks, and she couldn't swim. But searches of the river and the surrounding areas proved fruitless, and the woman with whom England met that morning was cleared by authorities.

bbm - answered my question, apparently they do not think she drowned.

How far is the Arkansas River from Riverside Park, where her car was found, and from Mount Shavano, where her remains were found?

And another article, with more details is here:

    http://www.themountainmail.com/free_...c6a050e1e.html

    * she couldn't swim, so at first they were worried she might have drowned, but did not find a body nor crime scene
    * her children Bricia and Cayl are now 40 and 43 years old, and provided DNA samples which led to the identification of her bones

Article has interviews with Bricia and the then chief of police, Leonard Post, which were done before the remains were identified.

There was probably not much of an investigation in 1980 since it was assumed she had fallen into the river and been swept away and drowned. Still, she met with some woman at the park where her car was found. You have wonder what sort of meeting this was. For some reason, she didn't want to take her kids with her. The police interviewed this women and accepted her explanation and apparently came to the conclusion that Beverly suffered her mishap after this meeting was completed.

Now that we know Beverly was murdered around the time of this "meeting", it would be interesting to know who this woman was and what was her story.

More information on the woman she was going to meet. Based on what they have released, it seems more than likely that she was involved or at least has knowledge on who was responsible for Beverly's murder.

Colorado Cold Cases: Woman entwined in affair vanished after meeting lover’s wife

She also was having an affair with a man whose wife was pregnant, according to Leonard Post, who was at the time the chief of the Salida Police Department.

England told the friend that she was going to meet with her lover’s wife at Riverside Park.
England had some “personal issues” to discuss with the woman, Post said. He declined to name the woman, who was pregnant.

“There was a meeting between these two ladies about this affair,” Post said.
After learning about the confrontation between England and the pregnant woman, a police officer went to the pregnant woman’s house to ask her whether she had met with England earlier in the day.

The woman had injuries on her body.

“There was evidence of aggressiveness. We don’t know if it was a fight or self injury,” Post said.

But the woman declined to speak with police. She requested legal counsel, he said.
The pregnant woman who met with England moved out of town.

“Dale England was cleared. But the pregnant woman was not cleared at all,” Post said.

The woman and her husband were and remain persons of interest in the disappearance, he said.
One thing the identification of England’s bones proved conclusively was that she hadn’t accidentally fallen into the river and drowned.

Thank you for this update JusticeWillBeServed!

Yes it seems kind of obvious now what happened, doesn't it?

    From the article:

“There was evidence of aggressiveness. We don’t know if it was a fight or self injury,” Post said.

This sounds to me like she had cuts?

One thing the identification of England’s bones proved conclusively was that she hadn’t accidentally fallen into the river and drowned.

This too, could point to a stabbing if the bones had cut marks in them. I mean, there isn't much bones can show in terms of cod - shooting, stabbing, that's about it, right?

I wonder if they can track her down.
