Amazingly, this case hasn't been posted on WS -- till now: the mysterious death of Brooklyn labor organizer Jan Stackhouse, 52, on 01 May 2005. Murder, or bizarre accident? Whichever, this case is hugely interesting, and its Stockbridge MA locale is also quite interesting, being near the setting of perhaps America's first work of literature citing an unsolved murder.

Was it a fatal accident, its cause covered up by cowards who left the scene? Or perhaps the rough handiwork of the insane man who inhabited caves about a mile away? Or, perhaps, the boyfriend of the woman near whose property Stackhouse's body was found? Or someone else, lurking in the long Berkshire shadows? A person of interest has never been identified -- let alone a suspect.

Read all about it:

Outgoing Stockbridge police chief hopeful successor can help solve homicide

What does this second post have to do with the Jan Stackhouse murder?

In 2006, speculation developed following the arrest of William S. Demagall, who had been living in caves not far from Dugway Road in 2005, before he was charged with killing George Mancini, a Hillsdale, N.Y., man in his home the following year. Demagall was convicted in 2007 after a trial that included testimony about his mental illness, characterized by erratic, delusional behavior.

At the time, Berkshire District Attorney David Capeless confirmed that Demagall had attracted the attention of investigators in the Stackhouse case, but he declined to characterize him as a suspect.

The link here is in the OP, as is mention of a man living in caves near Stackhouse's death site.

Theories of the crime:

A deranged man later convicted of murder in a nearby NY town, who lived in caves a mile distant to victim

Male friend of woman near whose house the body was found; police investigated possibly bloody knife

Allegedly mentally ill alleged stalkers of woman above in mistaken-identity case

Person fired by victim at her job with health employees union and therefore a grudge killer

Murderous party or parties unknown

Death resulted somehow from accidentally incurred neck wound

Bumping this bit of post-midnight reading pleasure....if you like murder mysteries, that is.

Could someone, like, solve this already? It's maddening.
