After nine years, a cold case has been solved thanks to a deck of playing cards that highlights unsolved homicides and disappearances. In early January of 2006, Derrick Comrie was leaving from a basketball game at a local high school. While in the car, Hector Torres shot Comrie in the face with a shotgun. The two had been in a dispute previously and Torres had been planning this revenge killing. Torres admitted his role in the killing while in prison. He is taking a plea deal.

Under a plea agreement, Torres, 27, faces 30 to 38 years in prison for killing Comrie when he is sentenced July 9, court records show.

Torres will be sentenced the same day on charges of being an accessory to murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the Dec. 7, 2009, shooting of Luis "Berto" Benitez. Benitez died of his wounds several months later.

Another man was charged with Comrie's murder in 2006 but was later acquitted:

It is so gratifying to see justice served for people in all levels of society. Not just the rich, or this group or that group. RIP Derrick. Prayers for all involved family members and friends.

In February of this year, Noel Maldonado was sentenced for his role in the murder of Luis Benitez.

The state’s case against Noel Maldonado in a 2009 shooting in Hartford was never very strong, and the passage of time did not help it.

So on Wednesday, relatives of Maldonoado and the man he was accused of shooting watched as Hartford Superior Court Judge Laura F. Baldini sentencing Maldonado to 20 years in prison, suspended after he serves 12 years, and five years of probation.

Maldonado and another man, Hector Torres, were charged in the Dec. 7, 2009, shooting of Luis Benitez at a gas station at 125 New Britain Ave. Benitez was hit multiple times and suffered serious wounds. He lived until March 14, 2010, and during that time he endured the amputation of a leg.
