Girl Flings Herself From Bridge to her Death After Public Shaming by Father

It is the hair that haunts her.
More than a week after the accident, after seeing the tiny girl plummet from the highway overpass, after feeling the girl land on the roof of her car with a sickening thud and a shattering of glass, Chelci Frutos still cannot forget the girl’s hair.
“I saw a long black ponytail as she was falling,” Frutos told The Washington Post. “Afterwards, I kept picturing her falling over and over and over again in my mind.”
Frutos is far from the only person who will have trouble forgetting Izabel Laxamana’s hair. Her beautiful dark locks are at the center of Laxamana’s strange, sad and controversial story.

Days before the teen’s death, Laxamana’s father cut off her hair on camera in an apparent attempt to shame his daughter for “getting messed up.”

This really broke my heart. It's one thing to discipline a child, another to cut off her hair and post it online.

I agree. But just to be clear, while he videotaped it, there is no evidence that the father is the one who actually posted it online.

BTW, the reason he was angry with his daughter may have been ridiculous: Local reports suggested the schoolgirl was upset after being banned from running for a position on the student body. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-n...y-girl-5843689

Isn't cutting someone else's hair without their consent considered battery? What kind of parent does this? WTH?

OH NO> I thought maybe she did something to 'disgrace' the family o something. But this is just ridiculous on his part. Poor girl.

How much could he have cut if the main thing the woman on whose car she landed recalls is her long black ponytail?

glad I wasn't only one confused on that......

    this should clear things up

    ''.....And I saw a ponytail.”

For days afterward, the ponytail wouldn’t just haunt Frutos; it would also confuse her. She read about Laxamana’s father cutting off all her hair and wondered if she had been seeing things.

“The story about her dad hacking off her hair I didn’t believe at first because I saw a long black pony tail as she was falling,” Frutos said. “I was literally that close. But I came to find out that it was just a piece of her hair that he left long. She did have a long piece of hair that was left and that’s what I saw."

It seems to me that men controlling women's hair is not uncommon among different religions, especially fundamentalist ones -- the Duggar family would be an example, here.

My Chinese parents didn't let me choose my haircuts until I left their house as an adult so I don't see a forced haircut on a middle schooler as something so upsetting. But I still feel for the girl and I hope the father suffers. Here's a news video explaining what happened.
