NY - Search for escaped convicted killers, David Sweat & Richard Matt, Dannemora #6

    RICHARD MATT and DAVID SWEAT

Search underway for two murderers missing from state prison in Dannemora
    PUBLISHED: SATURDAY, JUNE 6, 2015 AT 9:43 AM - UPDATED: SATURDAY, JUNE 6, 2015 AT 11:18 AM
    Daily Courier-Observer

DANNEMORA - A search is underway for two prisoners, both serving sentences for murder convictions, that were discovered missing early Saturday morning from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora.

New York State Police said they received a call at 5:45 a.m. Saturday from corrections’ officials reporting two prisoners were unaccounted for during a 5:30 a.m. bed check. State police are now currently searching for the two escaped prisoners.

    They are:
Richard Matt, 48, a white male, 6’ tall, 210 pounds, with black hair and hazel eyes. He has tattoos on back “Mexico Forever”, a heart on his chest and left shoulder, and a marine corps insignia on his right shoulder.

David Sweat, 34, white male, 5’11” tall, 165 pounds, brown hair and green eyes. He has tattoos on his left bicep and his right fingers
NY Gov.: 2 Convicted Murderers Used Power Tools to Escape
    DANNEMORA, N.Y. — Jun 6, 2015, 4:50 PM ET
    ABC News/AP

Two convicted murderers used power tools to cut through steel pipes at a maximum-security prison near the Canadian border and escape through a manhole, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Saturday.

"It was an elaborate plot," Cuomo said after joining law enforcement authorities to retrace the prisoners' escape route from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y.

    [...]
"A search revealed that here was a hole cut out of the back of the cell through which these inmates escaped," Annucci said. "They went onto a catwalk which is about 6 stories high. We estimate they climbed down and had power tools and were able to get out to this facility through tunnels, cutting away at several spots."

    Massive Search For Escaped Inmates
Two escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility
    UPDATED 6:26 PM EDT Jun 06, 2015

DANNEMORA, N.Y. —New York State Police say they are searching for two inmates described as "dangerous" who escaped overnight from Clinton Correctional Facility.

    [...]
The Governor calls the escape "extraordinary" and says it's the first time anyone has escaped from the maximum security portion of the facility since it opened in 1865.

    [...]
State police have set up numerous roadblocks in the greater Dannemora area as they search for the escapees. WPTZ's Vanessa Misciagna reports armed troopers are searching every vehicle on Route 374 at a police checkpoint, and dozens of troopers and corrections officers are searching the woods off Smith Street.

Anyone who sees people resembling the prisoners or with any information should call State Police at 563-3761.

I noticed some stuff that didn't make sense regarding the path the guys would've made to get from Dannemora to Lindley to Friendship so I will go ahead and re-post this map that shows the likely path, which of course presumes they're riding the rails on freight trains as often as possible:

There is no doubling back IMO AFAIK.

Search for escaped convicted killers, David Sweat & Richard Matt, Dannemora #6

2nd prison worker charged in connection with inmates' escape
    Wed June 24, 2015

A corrections officer from the Clinton Correctional Facility in upstate New York has been charged with three felonies and a misdemeanor in connection with the escape of two convicted killers earlier this month, the prison guard's lawyer said Wednesday.

Officer Gene Palmer, 57, faces one count of promoting dangerous prison contraband, two counts of destroying evidence and one count of official misconduct, a misdemeanor, attorney Andrew Brockway said. The contraband charge carries the heaviest possible punishment, up to seven years in prison.

Is it possible they are far away from where searchers are?...maybe the DNA evidence was planted?
But, really, the only guy to plant it would be the cabin owner guy, right?

Not everyone gets a bail bondsman. You don't get your percentage back later if you do. If you put up cash bail you get your money back later as long as you appear faithfully at court. He posted bail, and it will be refunded to his credit card later if he keeps appearing, unless the judge finds him guilty and there are cash fines involved which will be taken from the bail amount first.
    "Posting Bail

When you "post bail," you are paying the amount that your bail was set at. This can generally be done in a few ways, including:

    Paying by cash or check in the amount of your bail [or in some states/jurisdictions, a credit card];
    Signing over ownership rights to property that has a cash value that is equal to or exceeds the amount of your bail;
Giving a bond (a promise to pay if you do not appear) in the full amount of your bail; or
Signing a statement that says you will appear in court at the required time, generally called "being released on your own recognizance."

Generally, if you can be released on your own recognizance, you should try to take that option. However, many people are forced to purchase a bail bond in order to get released from jail. A bond is much like a check that you give to a friend, asking him or her not to cash it until you say it's okay to do so. Generally, the purchase price of the bond is about 10% of the value. Therefore, if your bail is set at $5000, you can expect to pay about $500 in order to purchase a bail bond.

If you have the chance to avoid getting a bail bond in order to get out of jail, it is often good advice to take that second option. If you appear at court and proceed with all requirements thereof, you will generally get the full amount of your bail returned back to you (minus some small, administrative fees from the court). However, if you buy a bail bond, you are already out 10% of your bail amount (this is generally not refundable), and you will also probably have to give the bail bondsman some collateral in order to get the bond (such as an interest in your car or home). If you fail to appear in court at a required time, the bondsman can cash in on the collateral you gave, meaning that he or she could sell your property and take the money from the sale. "

"Whether reforms are needed"???????????????? I don't know anything about the governor except he is probably the only person in the USA who doesn't know if reforms are needed. Absolutely amazing!!

The article says 'Oh, Palmer's such a liked guy', but HELLO - he gave 2 convicted murderers saw blades, chisel blade, screwdriver, and, in exchange for donuts, he smuggled hamburger laced with saw blades and tools to them, too. Since it's said Palmer passed a polygraph and did not know what was inside the strangely shaped, strangely wrapped hamburger (we know Palmer said he asked Tillie, 'Is there anything wrong with this (hamburger)?' and she said 'no' and he did not know about the smuggled prison breakout tools. Well, Okay. But crime is crime. Palmer did not run that weirdly shaped frozen hamburger through the scanner as was his job - and why? We are told he 'did it for the donuts...'

Oh, heavens, this article is priceless!!
"But while Mitchell is universally despised by locals around Dannemora for her alleged role in Matt and Sweat's escape, Palmer is admired for the way he has continued to care for his wife." OK, he "cares" for her by abandoning her to move in with his gf?? Sure, he may visit her every day, but someone with MS needs a lot more than "visits." If she's deteriorated to the point where she's in a wheelchair, she requires a lot of personal care.
And, he "gave" her the house, and (assuming the mortgage is paid off), who's paying the taxes, the utilities, buying groceries? It's grand of him to list her as a dependent on his health insurance, but who's paying the deductibles and co-pays?

"Gene is the consummate professional, and he knows he has to get information out of the prisoners - and you can't do that unless you show them some respect.'" Sounds like he was showing (and giving) them a whole lot more than respect. And he accepted multiple paintings from them, which amounts to taking bribles -- not to mentioned being bribed by Tillie.

    So sweet!

THANK YOU to the school children in from the Malone area who delivered bagged lunches and kind messages for the members of law enforcement working on the search in Franklin County. We appreciate your support!

Maybe a copycat of the Binghamton graffiti?

(The "D" isn't like Sweat's though, which is exactly the same in his signature on that letter to the pressconnects reporter that was shared in the last thread, and in the original "Have a Nice Day" note.)

I keep coming back to: what was IN IT for GP??? He didn't just fall off the turnip truck, he has been there for 28? years. It HAS to be money, but how?? One would think that after that much time spent in there, he wouldn't trust anyone as far as he could throw them. I don't doubt that he is a nice guy, but why risk his career and reputation to bend over backwards for these murderers? If not money, it had to be blackmail. JUST MY OPINION

On CNN right now they're saying Gene Palmer speaks to CNN but I didn't hear it. I'm sure they'll replay it. They're talking about this story now though. Also said the guards may have been sleeping when the escape happened.

"CNN spoke to a law enforcement official who revealed that investigators are looking into the possibility that the two men were able to break free from the prison virtually unsupervised as no one was awake to catch them as they slipped out from a hole each made in the walls of their cells."
