Another story: http://www.wcvb.com/news/apparent-human-remains-found-on-deer-island/33772586

The remains of the little girl, who was wearing pajamas and was believed to be between 2- to 3-years-old, were found in a trash bag, sources told 5 Investigates.

It sounds like the remains were too recent to be Ayla or Caileigh.

I agree it sounds probably too recent to be either, but the pajama mention made my heart leap anyway. :heartbeat: It just reminded me of Ayla's 911 call:

a father said his 20-month-old daughter was last seen about 10 hours before, gave a brief description of the pajamas she was wearing

Prayers to the woman walking her dog who found her. On some of these cases I always think that I would like to get out myself and search - but if I found something like that I would probably really have a heart attack. I know it's something you could never, ever forget :(

I have a three-year-old little girl. It hits hard when you can put a face to it. Prayers for quick identification.

Godspeed in the ID and laying the poor baby to rest! And the perp needs to be found STAT! No little one jumps in a trash bag and then rolls into the harbor. Praying for the poor baby.

Yeah, that would be really hard to recover from. Reports on the TV news said she was visibly shaken as she took the police to the scene.

This is not an isolated area. I don't know whether anybody lives on Deer Island, but it's a heavily used recreational area. Somebody must have seen something.

Authorities Release Description of Toddler Found Dead on Deer Island
BOSTON, June 26, 2015—Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley, State Police Colonel Timothy Alben, and Winthrop Police Chief Terence Delehanty today released a physical description of the young girl whose body was found on Deer Island yesterday.

After a physical examination by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, investigators believe the girl was about 4 years old with brown eyes and brown hair that was about 14 inches long. She stood about 3½ feet tall, and weighed just over 30 pounds. She was not significantly overweight or underweight for her height. Her ethnicity has not been established.

Neither the cause nor the manner of the girl’s death has yet been determined. Pathologists will undertake additional specialized testing before attempting to make those findings.

The investigation into the circumstances of the girl’s death and how her body came to be on the western shoreline of Deer Island, where it was discovered by a dog walker early yesterday afternoon, remains active, as do efforts to link her case with existing reports of missing children.

Perhaps most valuable, authorities said, will be assistance from members of the public who notice that a child meeting this description has gone missing from their community. Anyone aware of such a missing child may call the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit at 617-727-8817 or Winthrop Police at 617-539-5806.

AFAIK, no one lives there. It's about two-thirds sewage treatment plant and the rest is recreation area. For those not from the area, it is no longer actually an island. You would think that someone would have seen someone dumping the bag. Poor kid.

Wait, I just read the articles again. Are they saying they think she washed up on shore? If so, she wasn't in the water very long if they have such a detailed description of her.

I think that they haven't determined that yet.

This is Deer Island with the wastewater treatment plant pinpointed. https://goo.gl/maps/4MdDd
She was on the western shore, which is the harbor side. As FiveFelines mentioned, it's more of a peninsula than an island. It's in Winthrop, not Boston proper, and just across the water from Logan Airport. Here's a view of the larger area: https://goo.gl/maps/uru0T

How heartbreaking, this sweet baby needs her name back :(

I was about to ask what was meant by 'no longer an island' so your post here was very helpful and I love it when people post map links so thank you!

Lots of land in the Boston area used to be water or swamp. It's been gradually filled in over time to connect islands, turn swamp to buildable land, etc.

The whole Back Bay used to be a shallow marsh. This map shows some of it: http://www.iboston.org/rg/backbayImap_1890.htm

You can tell the outlines of Back Bay. It's the only place in Boston where the streets run straight and meet at right angles. Everywhere else it's curved to the contours of the land and the places where drunken cows used to walk home after their Friday night parties.

I doubt she's been reported missing if her parents were involved in the death. Can't they run her DNA through something to try to match her parents?
