NC - Sheila Brown, 21, Ayden, September 1973

In 1973, Sheila Brown's body was discovered in Ayden, North Carolina. Investigators at the time said it was a murder-rape case based on multiple factors. However, an autopsy was conducted and it concluded that Sheila Brown died of "natural causes". After the report was filed, the case was closed. An administrative assistant going through some files at the police station found this case and determined that something wasn't right about the findings. Now, the case is reopen and a proper investigation is set to begin.

Re-opening of 41 year old cold case

Major Dance said, “found in a unnatural position, clothing missing, and that type of thing certainly would cause any reasonable person to suspect something criminal had been afoot.”

Upon arrival at the crime scene police immediately labeled this case a murder-rape. There were tire marks, evidence that she was dragged, and her missing clothes were more than 300 feet away from where her body was found. Despite those facts, the case was closed and labeled as death by natural causes.

"Road block in 42-year-old cold case"

    http://wnct.com/2015/09/09/road-bloc...old-cold-case/

A block in the investigation of a 40-year-old cold case. Pitt County, Major Dance, told WNCT she does not know the exact location of Sheila Brown’s body. She says she can’t move forward until she’s 100% sure of the location.
“Doing an exhumation is not one of those things where you go and you do and you have the wrong person, its very expensive, very costly thing to do, time consuming, orders have to be written up to get this even done.”

"More than 40-year-old cold case may be at a standstill"

Brown’s daughter says the Pitt County Sheriff’s office hasn’t contacted her in months, and she’s hesitant to contact them herself.

“To get this far to just stop is what’s bothering me,” Iris Brown, Sheila Brown’s daughter said. “That’s why I’m kind of hesitant about calling them and seeing where it’s at because I just got this feeling that they are going to say we’re at a standstill.”

40 year-old-cold case now listed as unsolved murder

    http://wnct.com/2015/12/10/40-year-o...solved-murder/

Major Paula Dance with the Pitt County Sheriff’s office says the case of Sheila Brown is no longer death by natural causes, it is an unsolved murder.

Major Dance says, “Going forth and doing an exhumation on where I think the grave is and then it’s not the right grave, then we’ve essentially wasted monies.”

Even though law enforcement can’t move forward, Brown’s daughter, Iris, is relieved to know someone gave her mom the investigation she deserved.

“We won’t know who when or where, but at least she got a proper investigation this time,” Iris Brown said.
