UT - Janeil Drommond, 29, shot to death, Bountiful, 28 Aug 2005

A Bountiful man was tackled by neighbors and arrested today after he gunned down and killed his ex-wife in front of their two young children. The boys' mother died and their grandfather was seriously wounded.

At the front door a troubled marriage and a bitter divorce played out to a deadly conclusion. David Drommand's ex-wife brought their two young sons over for a Sunday visit, accompanied by her father.

Lt. Steve Gray, Bountiful Police Dept.: "They got to the door, close proximity of the door, the husband he came out firing a handgun, mother was hit several times, father was hit several times."

She died instantly. Her wounded father wrestled for the gun along with a neighbor and one of the shooter's roommates.

The two young boys evidently saw everything.

Jeff Nemelka: "They were upset and crying. They didn't know. They wanted their dad. But their dad was going to jail and their mother was dead on the porch."

Lt. Steve Gray: “That’s a hard thing and it’s going to impact them for the rest of their lives.”

Neighbors told us one other thing that suggests another layer of tragedy. They say the divorced Mom was planning to re-marry in a wedding scheduled later this week. We don't know if that had anything to do with the shooting.

Janeil Drommond had little warning Sunday when she was shot to death, but her ex-husband had told her months ago he intended to kill her.

"I've wanted you dead for a while now," she quoted him in a police report filed in March, when she was granted an ex parte protective order that was still in effect when she was killed.

David Edward Drommond, 29, was booked into jail Sunday afternoon after a dramatic episode at his Bountiful residence where both Janeil and her father, Neil Bradley, were each shot twice. Janeil died at the scene, and Bradley is in critical condition at University of Utah Hospital.

The violent scene happened around 1:30 p.m. when Janeil, also 29, and their two children, a 3-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, appeared at Drommond's home for his visitation with the kids. Bradley stayed in the car, but was with Janeil "for moral support," said Bountiful Lt. Steve Gray.

Drommond answered the door, gun in hand, and began shooting his ex-wife as the children ran inside the house, Gray said. Bradley ran to help his daughter and he was shot by his former son-in-law, Gray said.

FARMINGTON — David Edward Drommond Jr., will spend the rest of his life in prison with no chance at freedom, a 12-member jury decided unanimously Thursday afternoon.

The seven women five men jury deliberated 2 1/2 hours and 2nd District Judge Jon Memmott pronounced the sentence immediately. The jury could have opted for life with the possibility of parole.

The penalty phase in the capital murder case against Drommond began Tuesday, with prosecutors arguing that Drommond should be locked up for life for the brutal shooting of his ex-wife, Janeil Bradley on Aug. 28, 2005. The possibility of the death penalty was taken off the table in exchange for Drommond's guilty plea in December.

At one point, Marjorie Drommond burst out into an emotional tirade on the witness stand, denouncing privacy laws and the medical care system.
