8 young people dead, including children, in Cape Town tavern stampede
Eight young people between the ages of 15 and 23 have died in a stampede at a South African tavern packed with underage partgoers in Makhaza, Khayelitsha, Cape Town. The youngest victim was celebrating her 15th birthday.
The accident, which happened in the early hours of Sunday morning, is thought to have happened after shots were possibly fired inside the tavern and the youngsters rushed out onto a high staircase at the side of the building. The steel handrail collapsed, sending the teens plunging over the side.
Piling tragedy on top of tragedy, two of the injured died on the way to hospital, after their ambulance was involved in an accident.
An investigation is underway and the tavern's been closed temporarily.
