Absolut and Olivia, thank you so much for posting these. I watched some program today about the missing resulting from Katrina and they were talking about how many families were looking for their loved ones online. Not so much because they thought they would find them, as that they just don't know what else to do. But they also talked about how many sites there were, and they suggested that some central database should be constructed.
 
BillyGoatGruff ~ You're welcome. :) New Orleans is a city I hold near and dear to my heart and I am so sorry to hear you have friends who are missing. I have met wonderful people there as well, became engaged there and am absolutely horrified at the devastation. I remember reading a bunch of posts from you about the city of New Orleans on another Missing Person's thread a while back, so when this happened I was thinking of you, I'm terribly sorry to hear you had so many close friends affected by this tragedy and I hope that you are soon able to locate them all and confirm their well being. Please keep us updated. I will keep you and yours in my thoughts.

I have been following the coverage of Hurricane Katrina and am absolutely stunned by the human suffering and devastation in the wake of this disaster.

As a Canadian, I wanted to know what assistance our government was going to extend to the people of the United States. Prime Minister Paul Martin issued a formal statement extending sympathy and promising aid and support where needed. Our Deputy Prime Minister subsequently contacted Michael Chertoff, the U.S. Homeland Security Secretary, and informed him that Canada is ready to extend and provide any assistance needed (working with their partners in provincial and territorial governments). Following this offer the U.S. Department of Health and Services is now communicating with the Deputy PM of what varied services and aid Canada can provide.

Indicating Canada's wish to help our American neighbors, the Deputy Prime Minister was quoted as saying, "The United States has a long and proud history of assisting other countries in times of crisis, and we now stand ready to help them in their time of need."

This news release also provided a link to the Canadian Red Cross providing information to individual Canadians if they wanted to make a financial donation. If any Canadian "Websleuthers" are able and interested, call 1-800-418-1111 or online at www.redcross.ca

I just donated $100.00 and it was the easiest $100.00 I have ever parted with. My thoughts and prayers are with all who have suffered because of this horrible tragedy. I apologise if I have gone on too long! Thanks.

Thanks. I have since heard of the wherabouts of two more friends. One has been evaced out to the Cajun Dome in Lafayette, while his 85 year old mother is in a medical facility in Baton Rouge. Apparently they survived by clinging to the outside of the house instead of climbing into the attic. I had assumed they were dead, to be honest.
A friend I've known for over 25 years finally turned up in his mom's house in Arkansas after fleeing in a friends car with his cats & dog. He said his house survived the storm, but not the looters.

I am just stunned that we haven't gotten food and water to the people in New Orleans yet. They have gone without food and water for 4 days now. Elderly and babies are dying from dehydration. There are no bathrooms that these people can use. Can you imagine what that is like and the stink as people are just going wherever.

As a lot of the people interviewed have said....we get food and water over to foreign countries right away but we are doing nothing for our own people. I guess the bigwigs were all on vacation and couldn't be bothered.

I sent an email to "Feed The Children." Their website said they are going to pitch in and mainly look after the needs of the children. What these people need first is their basic needs taken care of...food and water...diapers for their babies, etc. Can you imagine your baby wearing the same diaper for 4 days. Can you imagine your loved one dying and just being laid against a wall somewhere covered with a blanket and left there to rot. No place to wash your face much less your body or hair....no clean clothes and you were in water and mud up to your waist. What these people need is food and water yesterday or the day before.

What would be wrong with some of the large grocery stores in towns around New Orleans that didn't get damaged so bad loading up a few big trucks and bringing some food and water to these people?

Where is the Red Cross? What are they waiting for?

Watching the news is so frustrating...especially while I sit here in my warm home eating food and drinking whatever I want to drink. It is heart breaking to see that these people have lost everything that they owned.

One of the news networks that is in New Orleans is having people use the mic and cameras to inform their families that they are alright. I thought that was a good idea.

President Bush and these organizations who constantly ask for money to help people in need better get on the ball and help these people out. Feelings are running high about the lack of help these people are getting.

.........excellent post.................i just saw our PM on tv offerring our help to the U.S. in this time of crisis........
...my daughter cancelled her birthday plans and instead called her friends to say we've donated $50 to the american red cross instead..........
...my sister and her husband in florida have just taken a week off work to head up to the area to help ...............it's all so devastating...............our prayers go out to those in need............
 
Can I just say how devastated I am when I watch the footage and read the reports of the awful state of New Orleans. I read an article today-it was a diary of a woman who had been housed in the Superdome and the horrors she had seen- including a child being raped. It moved me to tears on my train into work this morning. I truly hope that this tremendous city can overcome this- which I am sure it will.

I live in London and I remember the kindness and sympathy extended to us when we experienced the 7/7 bombings. I, for one will be donating as much as I can to the relief funds. I live in hope that our (usually totally useless!) government will do all they can to help.

I hope you can overcome this awful tragedy and please know that I am absolutely thinking of the people there and the friends and family of the people who are missing. It really makes your realise how incredibly lucky you are.
