Jury selection to begin in trial of James Holmes in Colorado theater massacre

It will have been 914 days since authorities say Holmes burst into a packed suburban movie theater in the Denver suburb of Aurora, tossed a tear gas canister into the crowd and opened fire. The first panicked 911 call came at 12:38 a.m. on July 20, 2012.

The gunshots came less than a second apart, round after round, until 12 people were dead and more than 70 others injured, some permanently, in the barrage of shotgun and semiautomatic gunfire let loose during a screening of the Batman movie "The Dark Knight

The Holmes trial is expected to last much of 2015; jury selection could take until late spring. And should the death sentence be imposed upon Holmes, now 27, legal experts predict two decades of appeals.

A staggering 9,000 summons were mailed to prospective jurors in Arapahoe County. It is a net so wide that in a county with about 500,000 eligible jurors, nearly 1 in 50 residents could receive notices.

But first a jury must be seated.

I don't know if anyone is familiar with the Bill Marquardt case? He is a paranoid schizophrenic who murdered his mother and two other women. He was first deemed unfit, then later fit to stand trial. He got the death penalty. I wasn't sure if anyone with severe mental illness was ever sentenced to the DP. This shows it's entirely possible.

I think once they are deemed "sane" they can be on Death Row--normally their sentence is LWOP---

Morning!!! GB was great yesterday.....very painful before him. Don't think that the good doctor is helping the defense very much at all with her long drawn out explanations.....

So if JH is convicted and sentenced to death could he have a 'relapse' on death row and have his sentence commuted to LWOP?

Hello Friends! Are we ready?
One thing that bothers me (of many)- King always asks, 'if not for this mental illness, this shooting would have never happened'. His witnesses always say 'yes'. He asked Gur that yesterday.
I don't agree with that & how can they conclude that? They can't make that statement with certainty!
People who don't have mental illness, still murder.
I think, no matter mental illness or not, IMO, jh still would've planned & carried out a mass murder.
Just had to get that out! LOL
