    VA - Charles Zintner, 58 & Melissa Smarr, 55. Potomac River July 8, 2015

Searches for missing couple Charles Zintner and Melissa Smarr are now being deemed a 'recovery' operation after their boat - engine running, cell, purse and fresh salad still on the table - was found empty on the Potomac River in Stafford, Virginia. Yacht club staff notified LE at 11pm after they failed to return from a boat trip Wednesday.

The boat was found about a mile away and the search is going on at Mallows Bay, Charles County, Maryland, according to reporter Delia Goncalves' tweets.

I'm a bit worried as I keep making mistakes with Maryland and Virginia, but the article definitely says they are missing in Virginia.

It's worth reading reporter Delia's tweets about this disappearance. It's a real mystery. The boat wasn't even sailing. It was anchored when found, with everything appearing the couple just stepped away minutes before. A salad wouldn't stay fresh for long, I wouldn't have thought.

Too weird. This should be interesting. It sounds almost like they were hijacked, but by whom ? Why is LE proclaiming it as a recovery operation so early in the game ?

"It's probably 35, 40 feet out there," said Matz. "If a barge went past or a big cruiser they can throw a pretty sizeable wake and if they (the couple) weren't expecting it, it could throw them over," added Totani.

    LOL

I would think if a wave or wake was strong enough to throw them overboard, the salad would not stay in place and things aboard would have been moved around

"There were no weather conditions at the time and it is certainly not good that we found life preservers and no individuals on the boat," said Bill Smith, Charles County Fire spokesman.

Crews also say the radio was on. A purse, cell phone, and salad that was still fresh were all on board.

You're right. Not to mention evidence of water on the boat somewhere from a large wave.

Very sad news. I wonder how on earth this could have happened. Even if one person went overboard, you'd think the other would have used the life preservers before also going over the side, to help. But they were both still on the boat.

And I'm still uncertain why they'd have been on deck leaving an opened but uneaten salad on the table. Whatever happened, happened quick, for sure.

This has set my hinky meter going a little, to be honest. Especially with the boat being at anchor.

I guess a CoD will clear things up, but I'd like to know what river conditions were like.

I'm wondering if they have evidence of something else..........something they aren't talking about.

Could this be a joint suicide ? Murder suicide ?
