Jury selection to begin in trial of James Holmes in Colorado theater massacre

It will have been 914 days since authorities say Holmes burst into a packed suburban movie theater in the Denver suburb of Aurora, tossed a tear gas canister into the crowd and opened fire. The first panicked 911 call came at 12:38 a.m. on July 20, 2012.

The gunshots came less than a second apart, round after round, until 12 people were dead and more than 70 others injured, some permanently, in the barrage of shotgun and semiautomatic gunfire let loose during a screening of the Batman movie "The Dark Knight

The Holmes trial is expected to last much of 2015; jury selection could take until late spring. And should the death sentence be imposed upon Holmes, now 27, legal experts predict two decades of appeals.

A staggering 9,000 summons were mailed to prospective jurors in Arapahoe County. It is a net so wide that in a county with about 500,000 eligible jurors, nearly 1 in 50 residents could receive notices.

But first a jury must be seated.

After more than six weeks and as the mass murder trial nears its end, accused movie theater shooter James Holmes told a judge Thursday that he won't testify.

On CNN yesterday they continued their "70's series" documentary special and they covered Murders of the 70s.

It was very interesting as they reviewed Son of Sam, Helter Skelter with Manson and his clan, Hillside Strangler, Zodiac killer, John Wayne Gacey, and on and on.

It was a good overview of the phychopathic killers of the 70s

Of all of them, the ones that creeped me out the most at the time was Son of Sam and Gacey.

I was in NYC during the last killings of Son of Sam and I was told to be home by nightfall on the day of his last killing. I was not many blocks away from the park where Gacey killed 2 young couple in their car while they sat.
It was a very scary day and night. It was the anniversary date of some sort and LE knew he would strike again that night. The city was terrified and our parents made sure we were not out after dark. Us kids did not believe all the hype.

Sure enough that very night he killed his last 2 victims. It hit the news the following day. We learned our parents are sometimes right in their warnings to us because a lot of us didnt believe our parents and all the hype. When it actually happened it made a lot of us realize we had better listen to our parents more.
I could not believe how close I was to the park. I was too young to really be a potential victim because SOS was targeting young couples and mainly girls. But he would shoot the boyfriends if they were with the girls.
He hated women. It had something to do with his mom.
He was a real sicko.

Very scary times. The only good thing about that last twin murder was it allowed LE to catch him. LE got him very quickly after that last twin murder.

Wow Hatfield!!! That sounds really scary!!!

Yeah, it really was a scary time.
I was really young and kind of brushed off all the hype about SOS but me and my friends saw how our parents were truly worried about us, so we knew it was a real fear and something to really be worried about. I knew I was too young to be in SOS target pool of young adults and mainly young women but still we knew the guy was unpredictable.

It was about the 1 year anniversary date of one of his other killings so the news was breaking that entire day that he would kill again that very night. It was the last day of July in 1977.
July 31st. A Sunday night.
Every news broadcast that day and night was blasting warnings about that night. We actually thought he would have killed Friday or Saturday and when that didnt happen, the news figured this was the last day of the anniversary date so it was highly publisized.

When SOS actually did kill that evening and the news broke the following day we kids learned an important lesson. We need to listen to our parents and not just brush them off.

I actually couldnt believe I was even allowed to play outside that day till dark. The rule I had was to be home by dark that day. LOL

Dang it I wanted to see that one! I'll hopefully catch a repeat this weekend. I grew up around Ted Bundy--that was scary. He brought crime into our little lives. I don't remember anything being reported before him. There was one time our car broke down in front of the police station and they wouldn't let us call my parents unless we had money. We were a bunch of girls in formal wear for petes sake! We also had our little rapist running around as well. Scary being a teenager ---
I remember the day Bundy got the chair---we were all happy except one of the nurses in my office---she cried for him....I just walked away and felt he got what he deserved!...

Also wanted to add I loved hearing that John, Paul and a little bit George all tried to look after Ringo after the Beatles break up--made me happy --this was in one of the episodes. Also loved how Ed Sullivan paid them $5,000.00 for first appearance and then they got $10,000. for world concert!

Wow! Hatfield & Zoey! Growing up living so close to where these guys were! OMG, I can't imagine. I watched the program last night too. It was Crime & Cults. Zoey, they covered Bundy in the program. Also Jim Jones. They said there was a blackout in NYC when SOS was on his killing spree. They usually do a lot of repeats.

Yeah. Those CNN 70's specials have been really good. I have been watching most of them. Those years were my favorite years of my life. We had great music back then and great bands.

The interesting thing with the great bands of the 70s is while we lived through them, we did not realize it would stop. We thought it would just continue with the next great band and the next.

When the 80s hit , things started to change and I began to not like the music as much. Still some good bands but they were less frequent. Then by the 90s I hated most of the music.
Nowadays, I cant stand most modern music. LOL

I suppose I am stuck with my "Classic Rock". LOL
Stuck in my ways. :)

The one thing I did right was I used to stay up late and record on my cassette recorder all the good songs that would come on the radio. I now have 24 fully loaded 90-minute cassette tapes full of all my favorite songs from the 70's. I recorded them on a really good home stereo cassette recorder.

They are on Maxell UDXL2-90 (90 minutes) cassettes which were a really good brand of cassette tape.

Some have been "eaten" by my cassette player but I still have it hooked up to my home stereo system. I still play them on occassion and it is such good music.
The funny thing when listening is you can hear the occasional sound of the LP record "popping" sound as the needle would hit scratches in the vinyl album. Radio stations back then still used real vinyl records at some radio stations I listened to. LOL

Zeppelin, Doors, Cars, BTO, ELO, Rush, ELP, Heart, America, Kenny Loggins, Clearance Clearwater Revival, Kiss, and on and on. LOL

ETA: 1 correction to son of sam's last killing. The guy actually survived but was gravely wounded. I had forgotten he actually lived through the shooting. His girlfriend died.

Scary times! Like I mentioned I don't recall hearing of those evil things in our neck of the woods before that time period. I even hung out at Lake Sammamish ---

Good Morning WS Friends!

We certainly have been plowing through threads!
I can still hear Dr. G's voice in my head, like when one has ringing in the ears. Intrusive!

yes, I was surprised that the program said that the 70's were when crimes & homicides were at the height & kept rising. The 60's were peace, love & protest, but hippies weren't associated with violence--until Manson.
