RI - Lady at beach injured by explosion at Salty Brine Beach

"Officials have admitted they have no idea what happened when a 50-year-old woman was catapulted into the air after an 'explosion' on a Rhode Island beach.

The blast - which occurred at Salty Brine Beach at around 11.15am on Saturday - threw the victim several feet off the sand and on to rocks forming the beach's jetty, authorities said.

It prompted law enforcement to evacuate the beach, with witnesses suggesting a bomb might have gone off.

But after an on-site investigation, police have been left baffled by the bizarre incident after finding no devices that could have been set off.
The woman, who has not yet been named, was taken to South County Hospital in an 'alert and conscious' state. Her current condition remains unknown."

Lightning? I can't help but think with this being so close to the 4th of July it may have been some kind of small explosive. Maybe a few M80's? Very strange indeed.

Several reports of suspicious people in the area around the time of the blast were also investigated, officials said, but found to be unsubstantiated. Investigators said they are not looking for any suspects.

Witnesses said the woman, who has been identified as 60-year-old Kathleen Danise

One beachgoer, Michele Martin, said the injured woman "went five feet up in the air" and "landed on her face."

"She was in shock, couldn't talk at all," Martin said.

While several beachgoers said they smelled gas after the explosion, a spokesman for National Grid, which manages gas and electric in the area, said there are no gas lines along the beach.

Danise was hospitalized with a concussion, two broken ribs and bruises, a family member said.

Chantee Lans, WPRI 12 Eyewitness News, 6:40 (tonight), speaks with the injured woman's sister at the very spot on the beach in Narragansett, who said

“There was a massive bang and I seen the actual rocks shift and move,”... “And I started screaming ‘get up, get up.’ The same time I’m screaming, the sand errupted, threw my sister from there, like a live canon, face-down, unconscious – 10 feet away.”

Could this have been caused by an old WW2 ammunition that somehow had gone unnoticed & washed ashore decades ago---and lied buried under sand?

Rhode Island officials say the U.S. Coast Guard is getting involved in the investigation. Police have ruled out an explosive device or a seismic event.

I've looked through lots of old images, trying to discover what might have once been under those rocks there that could have caused the explosion, but no luck.

I've lived beachside in a few places and can only think of buried: shipwrecks, divers' oxgyen tanks, trash piles, ordnance ..or a dead whale. That last one is probably not feasible. A really old, historic buried trash pile on the beach seems the most likely cause to me - I've seen one of those bubble through vent pipes, though not explode. Or a washed up oxgyen canister that accidentally got buried when the breaker stones were put in place.

It's such a mystery. I really hope it gets solved, and the poor ladies who were hurt recover quickly.
