SC - Jean Bird Smith, 70, Ridge Spring, 13 July 2015

    Jean Bird Smith

UPDATE | DSS called to missing Aiken Co. woman's home before for neglect
Crews searched high and low Tuesday for a missing woman with Alzheimers. Jean Bird Smith's son says she went missing around four o'clock Monday afternoon, but he didn't call the Aiken County Sheriff's Office for three hours. News 12 has also learned, this is not the first time she has gone missing.

Neighbors said they had seen Jean Smith wandering outside before, sometimes even in the streets, but they never thought it would go this far.

Don Davenport woke up to the sound of helicopters overhead Tuesday morning. "My son called and told me what was going on. He said, 'Daddy they're looking for a lady, she slipped out of the house and she has Alzhiemers,'" Davenport said.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

"When from a long distant past nothing persists, after the people are dead, after things are broken and scattered, still alone, more persistent, more faithful, the smell and taste of things remain poised a long, long time like souls, ready to remind us, waiting, hoping for their moment amid the ruins of all the rest, and bear unfaltering in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence the vast structure of recollection."

Now deputies have called off the search in the more than 100 acres of land surrounding the house.

The surrounding land has very dense trees and is swamp like.

"For an elderly person, it would be hard for her to get out of there, especially in the state she's in, it would be hard for her to get out without someone going in and getting her out," Davenport said.

Deputies say they've done all they can in regards to searching that area.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office has called in a Search Tactical and Rescue Recovery Team based in Swansea, S.C., to assist in the search for Jean Bird Smith.

Smith, who lives in the 400 block of Cumbee Trail Road, apparently climbed out of her bedroom window.

“We remain hopeful that Ms. Smith is located safely so we can reunite her with her son,” Sheriff Mike Hunt said.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office still has no new leads in the case of the missing Ridge Spring woman, who left her Cumbee Trail Road home roughly eight months ago.

Jean Bird Smith, 70, went missing the night of July 13, when she crawled out of her bedroom window...
