" An independent photojournalist was working at the complex and walked away from their equipment during a break in the action between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. The photographer left a Canon DSLR camera body and Canon 70-200mm lens unattended on the floor of the press room. The press room is only available to people who are accredited.

When the photographer returned to the area, police said the camera and lens were gone.

Investigators say the theft was captured on video and after reviewing the footage, a suspect was identified. The suspect is described as a white male, standing five-foot-ten-inches tall, wearing a khaki coloured cap, a blue golf shirt and khaki-coloured shorts.

This incident was one of four thefts reported to authorities since the games began on July 10"

Throughout his career, Hershorn said thefts inside the photo pen have been common.

“I’ve done 16 Olympics and some world cups, and people are losing gear all of the time.”

Toronto and Peel Regional Police are investigating after two photographers reported having their camera equipment stolen from Pan Am venues on Sunday."

“We’ve always suspected that there are people who somehow get credentials for these events with only one goal, to leave here with equipment stolen from others.”

Good grief! I'm glad they caught a photo of the suspect. At the very least, he'll be shamed right out of future photo pens.

Really burns me when people working long and hard hours, get ripped off for the tools of their trade.
The thieves are calculating slime-balls, imo.

"A well-known Montreal photojournalist says a thief has stolen his life's work.

Le Devoir's Jacques Nadeau says earlier this week, someone broke into his home in Outremont and took hard drives containing more than three decades of photos, along with several prints."

Well it shouldn't be difficult to identify this guy. He has credentials that include a photo. So it seems it should just be a matter of going through the credential list to match photos to this surveillance photo. Unfortunately security at these events, though it often looks impressive, really isn't. The credentials could be stolen as well and the security at the entrance never really matched his face to the photo when he came into the venue.

Wondering if they ever identified the alleged " Pan Am " thief?

Olympic photographer who had $40,000 worth of gear stolen in Rio found some of it in a strange place

On Thursday, News Corp photographer Brett Costello had $40,000 worth of equipment stolen from a Rio cafe. On Friday, he found some of it in a bizarre place: on somebody next to him a security line for media entering an Olympic event.

Costello was in a security line entering Sambodromo stadium for the men’s team archery competition, when he noticed the man in line behind him was wearing an official Rio Olympics media vest that was stolen along with the equipment the day before.

He confronted the man wearing his stolen vest with the help of Rio Olympic personnel and local police. When faced with the fact that the man had entered the venue’s media area without a credential – an enormous security breach, by the way
