Buckingham Palace has criticized the publication of a home movie shot at Balmoral in 1933 that shows a young Princess Elizabeth and her mother giving a Nazi salute.

The footage also shows them with their uncle Edward, then-heir to the throne who later abdicated, and was known for his Nazi sympathies. The Queen was only six years old at the time and WW2 had not yet begun.

The biggest embarrassment there is the Queen Mother. The Queen was only a child and Edward VIII's Nazi sympathies were already widely known about.

I agree. I don't think it's exactly fair and is kind of disingenuous. We already know about Edward VIII. I am not a big fan of the royals, btw!

I think Harry wearing a Nazi uniform to a party is worse.

I don't think Harry wore the Nazi uniform as a joke. Hitler wanted a controlled population filled with those he selected because of their traits and alignment with his One World Order. Sound familiar?

I have no idea what you're talking about.

The picture was taken pre-WWII and the Queen was too young to even understand what she was doing. Harry was an adult when he intentionally wore the uniform. IMO and if I were a Windsor that would be more embarrassing.

When you know this, then Edward’s tasteless attempt to get his little niece to do a Nazi salute takes on a whole new resonance. Far from being an unconvincing revelation about the political sympathies of a seven-year-old child, those 17 seconds of juddery home movie become an exhilarating reminder that history does sometimes turn out well. Edward’s moral torpor, his inability to consult anything but his own tawdry vanities, is sharply on display in this pastoral scene gone wrong. What we are left with – but only if we read the image in its full context – is a profound sense of relieved thanks that the little girl in the kilt was eventually given the chance to put things right.
