The JBay (Jeffreys Bay) Open surf competition has been cancelled after a shark attacked Australian surfer Mick Fanning. He punched it in the back and managed to escape unharmed.

The event was being televised live and caused huge consternation among presenters, who could see the shark closing up behind Fanning. Jeffreys Bay is infamous for its shark attacks.

Video at the link but I'm too scared to watch it:

Watch the video, zwiebel! You can't really see much - just a fin briefly - and he didn't get hurt. I also can't believe he had his wits about him to do an interview minutes after it happened. Not many people get to tell that story: "yeah... i punched a shark"

I've just been forced to watch it with everyone tweeting it! Terrifying!! Aaaggh....

That makes me really happy that I live in Oregon. Because the water here is too cold to go in the ocean anyway.
