WARNING: This story contains details that some readers may find disturbing

snipped...Preliminary results from a post-mortem examination have determined that the victim is "a middle-aged Caucasian female."

Police are treating the discovery of a female torso in the lower Niagara River near the Rainbow Bridge as a homicide investigation.

The body — minus its head and limbs — was spotted floating in the water by citizens Wednesday around 2 p.m. and had likely been in the water from four days to two weeks.

Niagara Regional Police spokesman Derek Watson said the citizens who made the discovery were near the Maid of the Mist attraction.

Watson said police — who confirmed the discovery around 6 p.m. Thursday — won’t comment about how the limbs and head became detached from the body.

Niagara Parks Police recovered the body and detectives and forensic officers from the NRP are investigating. The body was sent to Hamilton General Hospital for an autopsy

I wonder how LE knows that this is not related to the murder of Guang Hua Liu. Perhaps it is evident that the torso was only in the water for a day or two?
    Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
    Therefore, send not to know, for whom the bell tolls;
    It tolls for thee.

"The victim is a white middle-aged woman, said Insp. Jim McCaffrey of Niagara Regional Police at a press conference Friday. He said she could be anywhere in her mid-20s to late 40s.

Police said the victim has a pierced navel without jewelry and she had had at least one caesarean section.

“It has been confirmed that the deceased is a homicide victim,” said McCaffrey, who said the cause of death is still being investigated."

Insp. Jim McCaffery said police are looking into around 20 missing-person cases across Ontario, and whether there is any link to the torso. McCaffery said those cases were provided to Niagara Regional Police from various law-enforment partners throughout the province. The NRP is reaching out to police forces outside the province, as well, to potentially learn about other missing person cases.Det. Sgt. Brian Smith said more tests on the torso still need to be done, while more evidence needs to be examined. He said the torso was recovered from the river, on the Canadian side, within 15 minutes of being spotted.Dangerous water currents below the Falls mean police can't send in divers to look for more body parts, so the search will be confined to boats and along the shore, said Police Chief Doug Kane."It's just too risky,"

How sad. This woman has at least one child if not more. I understand the difficulty in getting age accurate but my goodness there is a 20 year gap. From mid 20 to late 40's.

Let's get this woman's identity back!

Police estimate the woman’s body had been in the water for up to 10 days before spotted by a tourist near the base of the Falls before traveling near the Rainbow Bridge and removed by police on Wednesday afternoon.

Wondered the same thing at first, but thought that age 24 was very young to have "tubes tied".

Sorry. I must be missing something. What do you mean "tubes tied"? The unidentified woman had at least one C section. Only her torso was found.

McCaffery said the victim had a pierced navel and there are indications she had at least one caesarian section and had undergone a tubal ligation procedure.
