WARNING: This story contains details that some readers may find disturbing

snipped...Preliminary results from a post-mortem examination have determined that the victim is "a middle-aged Caucasian female."

Police expect to release further details about the victim on Friday, after an autopsy has been concluded.

Police said this homicide is not related to the investigation into the death of Guang Hua Liu, the Toronto woman whose body parts turned up in two cities earlier this month.

This is just crazy..Sounds like a copy cat..

A news release issued Thursday also said the victim had a pierced navel and "at least one caesarean section and a tubal ligation procedure."

What is going on in Ontario? I don't feel safe living here anymore.

Police are treating the discovery of a female torso in the lower Niagara River near the Rainbow Bridge as a homicide investigation.

The body — minus its head and limbs — was spotted floating in the water by citizens Wednesday around 2 p.m. and had likely been in the water from four days to two weeks.

Niagara Regional Police spokesman Derek Watson said the citizens who made the discovery were near the Maid of the Mist attraction.

Watson said police — who confirmed the discovery around 6 p.m. Thursday — won’t comment about how the limbs and head became detached from the body.

Niagara Parks Police recovered the body and detectives and forensic officers from the NRP are investigating. The body was sent to Hamilton General Hospital for an autopsy

I wonder how LE knows that this is not related to the murder of Guang Hua Liu. Perhaps it is evident that the torso was only in the water for a day or two?

"The victim is a white middle-aged woman, said Insp. Jim McCaffrey of Niagara Regional Police at a press conference Friday. He said she could be anywhere in her mid-20s to late 40s.

Police said the victim has a pierced navel without jewelry and she had had at least one caesarean section.

“It has been confirmed that the deceased is a homicide victim,” said McCaffrey, who said the cause of death is still being investigated."

Insp. Jim McCaffery said police are looking into around 20 missing-person cases across Ontario, and whether there is any link to the torso. McCaffery said those cases were provided to Niagara Regional Police from various law-enforment partners throughout the province. The NRP is reaching out to police forces outside the province, as well, to potentially learn about other missing person cases.Det. Sgt. Brian Smith said more tests on the torso still need to be done, while more evidence needs to be examined. He said the torso was recovered from the river, on the Canadian side, within 15 minutes of being spotted.Dangerous water currents below the Falls mean police can't send in divers to look for more body parts, so the search will be confined to boats and along the shore, said Police Chief Doug Kane."It's just too risky,"

How sad. This woman has at least one child if not more. I understand the difficulty in getting age accurate but my goodness there is a 20 year gap. From mid 20 to late 40's. :(

Let's get this woman's identity back!

Sorry. I must be missing something. What do you mean "tubes tied"? The unidentified woman had at least one C section. Only her torso was found. :waitasec:

Sorry, meant tubal ligation, sometimes suggested for women after third caesarian.(imo)

McCaffery said the victim had a pierced navel and there are indications she had at least one caesarian section and had undergone a tubal ligation procedure.

Thanks I missed the tubal ligation part. So Jane Doe must be middle age then (??) Why would they say mid 20's to late 40's? With the tubes tied I'm going to guess in her late 30's or 40's then.

It's not unheard of. I have a friend who had it done after her last child was born. She was 24/25 at the time. From what I understand, though, it is difficult to find a doctor who will do a tubal ligation on someone of that age; for some reason some people have a difficult time understanding that a woman may be certain she doesn't want more (or any) children and want to wait in case she changes her mind.

Police conclude search of Niagara River

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. - Police have stopped searching Ontario's Niagara River for more remains after a woman's torso was discovered last week.

They completed their search of the whirlpool to the Niagara Falls and didn't find anything, but say the search will resume if they get any new information

Investigators are calling the case a homicide.

I wonder what evidence they found that led them to rule it a homicide and not a suicide. Stab wounds perhaps ??

Well aren't her limbs and head cut off? I would think homicide right away..

Yes of course but they also said that because of the current, it was possible that the body was in the condition it was found. The pressure of the water current may have dismembered her and not necessarily the perp. (paraphrasing) from the first article.

So my question is what made them consider this a homicide? Stab wounds? Gun shot wounds?
