"Police investigating the death of a four-year-old boy on the Gold Coast in 2009 want to hear from neighbours at the time.

Tyrell Cobb was found unconscious at a Biggera Waters residence in May of that year and later died in hospital.

A murder charge against a 26-year-old man was withdrawn a year after Tyrell died.

Today,*Detective Inspector Mark White said new information had come to light, although he would not say what it was.

He said police were appealing for information from anyone residing at unit complexes where the boy had lived, at Biggera Waters"

What happened to Tyrell Cobb?

Police then believed his wounds were intentional, with a pathologist finding Tyrell died from "intra-abdominal injuries".

More than 70 different injuries were found on his body, most of which were small bruises. Tyrell suffered internal bleeding and a severe abdominal injury the pathologist believed was caused by "blunt impact" from strong punches or an object.
The pathologist said the wounds were likely sustained over a period of days and "collectively could not be typical of accidental injuries".
Two U-shaped scars were also uncovered on Tyrell's legs, allegedly caused by the top end of a cigarette lighter.

Tyrell Cobb death: Gold Coast 'killer' mum granted bail

Supreme Court judge says there is no evidence to suggest a mother was physically involved in the murder and torture of her son six years ago.
Heidi Strbak, 32, was charged by police in August with the murder of son Tyrell Cobb, who died in 2009 at the Gold Coast.
Her former partner Matthew Scown, 32, has also been charged with murder and torture.
However Ms Strbak was granted bail in the Supreme Court on Wednesday, with Justice Peter Flanagan suggesting police would have a stronger case pursuing a manslaughter charge.

That evidence was later confirmed to police by Strbak’s brother, Danial Allan, who claimed the boy said: “(Scown) punched me in the tummy”.

A few hours later Tyrell was dead.

During the investigation, police intercepts claim to catch Strbak admitting in a phone conversation to her other brother, Bradley Allan, that she lied when giving her original statement to police.

She allegedly asked her brother whether she should alter the statement in case the truth came out in court.

Police claim he advised against it.

“You’ve lied half your life,” Strbak’s brother allegedly replied. “You know how to lie.”

Police claim Strbak agreed.

Strbak has been released on conditional bail, including reporting conditions and a $100,000 surety. Her case is due to be mentioned in the Brisbane Magistrates Court again on November 9.

"A four-year-old Gold Coast boy who died after allegedly being punched in the stomach could 'certainly have been saved' and would have been in severe pain for a number of hours, a court has been told.

Tyrell Cobb was found unconscious at a Biggera Waters home on May 24, 2009, with 70 injuries on his body and was later pronounced dead in hospital.

His mother Heidi Strbak, 33, and her ex-partner Matthew Scown, 33, face a committal hearing at Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday charged with murder."

Horrific and tragic.

The step father was recently released from jail and laughed as he was set free, after serving 4 years for manslaughter. 4 years. Was much backlash on Australian social media about this.

Mother facing manslaughter trial in November. Hopefully there is justice for this little boy. Over 70 bruises and abrasions on this poor little ones body (including cigarette burns) and no one has been held accountable??

Mother of Tyrell Cobb pleads guilty to manslaughter
Melanie Petrinec, The Courier-Mail

‘THE mother of Tyrell Cobb has pleaded guilty to manslaughter this afternoon and it has been revealed she allegedly delivered the blow that killed the four-year-old.

Heidi Strbak appeared in the Supreme Court in Brisbane this afternoon supported by family and friends just weeks after the case made headlines when her ex-boyfriend received a paltry four-year sentence on the same charge.’

‘Strbak and her then-partner Matthew Scown were initially charged with murder, but the charges were downgraded at a committal hearing last year.’

‘Her barrister said the sentence later this month would be contested as she was pleading guilty on the basis of criminal negligence.

Her bail has been enlarged until sentencing.’

ABC NEWS

‘Any one of three people could have inflicted the fatal blow that killed four-year-old Tyrell Cobb, and there is not enough evidence to hold his mother responsible, a court has heard.

Tyrell's mother Heidi Strbak pleaded guilty and was convicted of manslaughter but is contesting allegations she delivered the fatal blow which killed him.’

‘Prosecutor Phil McCarthy said Tyrell died from "blunt force trauma" which caused "leakage of the child's stomach contents".

"He would have survived if he had received treatment," he said.

"It was Heidi Strbak who applied the blunt force trauma to her son."

Strbak's defence barrister Greg McGuire said Mr Scown, Strbak and Tyrell's uncle all had contact with the child before his death and there was not enough evidence to hold Strbak responsible for the fatal wound.

He said the court would hear that Mr Scown had previously assaulted Tyrell.’

Tyrell's mum bruised his cheek the weekend he died, court told
The Sydney Morning Herald

48 mins ago (as at 17:12 AEDT 8 November 2017)

‘Heidi Strbak slapped her four-year-old son Tyrell Cobb so hard across the face on the weekend he died that he sustained a bruise under his eye, a court has heard.

Strbak's former partner, Matthew Scown told the Brisbane Supreme Court on Wednesday the incident occurred at the dinner table either one or two days before the boy's death in May 2009.

“He vomited and she slapped him across the face. On the Sunday there was bruising under his eye," Scown told court while pointing to his left cheek.

"There was another occasion when she frog-matched him to his room. She held on to his arm ... she slapped him across the, in the ribs area."

Scown was giving evidence in Strbak's contested sentence hearing for Tyrell's manslaughter.‘

Tyrell's father testifies, damages door
Daily Telegraph
Alexandra Patrikios, Australian Associated Press
November 9, 2017 7:02pm

‘Dramatic scenes have played out in the sentencing of Tyrell Cobb's mother after the four-year-old's father testified she said she couldn't "handle" the boy shortly before he died.

Heidi Strbak appeared in the Brisbane Supreme Court on Thursday as her contested sentencing hearing for a manslaughter charge entered its third day.

Following a sometimes tense testimony, the little boy's father Jason Cobb slammed and damaged a glass door as he left the court.’

‘It came after Mr Cobb was grilled by defence barrister Greg McGuire about his evidence that Strbak called him and said she couldn't "handle" the child in the days preceding his death.

"Here today for the very first time you say (Strbak) gave you a reason (for calling) and that was 'I can't handle him'?" Mr McGuire pressed.

"Yep," Mr Cobb said.

"I suggest to you sir you're not telling the truth," Mr McGuire said.

"You can suggest what you want," Mr Cobb replied.

On a separate occasion, the court heard Tyrell appeared to fall quiet before telling his father Strbak's then-partner Matthew Scown "keeps hitting my head".

When he spoke to Strbak about his son's allegation, Mr Cobb said she told him the child was "just making it up".’

Neighbour heard child scream 'then suddenly stop' on the day Tyrell Cobb died
7 News/AAP
Alexandra Patrikios
9 November 2017 7:03pm AEDT

‘Former neighbour Catherine Dyball [also] testified on Thursday and said she recalled hearing the sound of a child screaming, then suddenly stopping, on the evening of May 24, 2009, when Tyrell died.

She said she later witnessed Strbak tell a man "I leave him with you for one hour and this is what happens" after paramedics arrived in the evening.

Strbak pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the basis of criminal negligence, but the prosecution is arguing she was responsible for the blunt force trauma that caused her young son's death.

The hearing continues.’

Tyrell Cobb's mother Heidi Strbak inflicted fatal blow on toddler, judge finds
ABC News
BY ELLIE SIBSON
UPDATED ABOUT 4 HOURS AGO (as at 18:34 AEDT 11 December 2017)

‘Heidi Strbak inflicted the fatal blow or blows that killed her four-year-old son on the Gold Coast in 2009, a Supreme Court judge has found.’

‘In the judgement, the Supreme Court found there was "a compelling circumstantial case that Strbak inflicted serious injuries that weekend on her son, including the fatal injuries".’

‘The court concluded there was no "compelling evidence Scown inflicted the fatal injuries".’

‘The prosecution said Scown's evidence that Strbak hit Tyrell and would not take him to the hospital, should be taken as "accurate and truthful".

Strbak will be sentenced next week.’

Tyrell Cobb death: Mother Heidi Strbak jailed for toddler's manslaughter
ABC News
BY ELLIE SIBSON
UPDATED 10 MINUTES AGO (as at 19:15 AEDT 18 December 2017)

attachment.php

‘Heidi Strbak has been sentenced to nine years in jail by the Supreme Court in Brisbane over the manslaughter of her four-year-old son Tyrell Cobb.’

‘In sentencing, Justice Peter Applegarth said a good mother, or any reasonable person, would have sought medical treatment.

”If you'd taken him for emergency treatment you might have been investigated and possibly charged. But he would be alive, and you would not have been convicted of manslaughter.”

"You were Tyrell's mother, with a primary duty for his care. You knew if Tyrell was taken to hospital, and the source of his injuries was investigated, you would be held responsible for his neglect."’
