The same day prosecutors filed criminal charges against the Indianapolis man accused of fatally shaking Joshua, the Indiana Grantmakers Alliance announced plans for a community summit on the problems of child abuse and neglect.

"The impetus for the summit comes from what we are seeing in the headlines and the fact that the state is in the midst of making changes in its child-welfare system," said Melanie Audette, vice president of the alliance, composed of public, private and corporate groups that distribute grant money.

At least 28 Hoosier children have died from abuse and neglect this year, continuing a trend in which one child has died each week, on average, over the past decade in Indiana.

Unlike most of the alliance's other programs, the summit, Audette said, will be open to local government and school officials, religious leaders and others who work with and support children.

The State initially charged Smith with class A felony battery and later added a murder charge. On June 20, 2006, a jury found Smith guilty as charged. The trial court entered judgment of conviction on both counts. At a sentencing hearing on July 14, 2006, the trial court... sentenced Smith to forty-five years for murder.
