MOUNT VERNON —Officials in this city and beyond are trying to determine how Raynette Turner, a 42-year-old mother of eight awaiting arraignment on a shoplifting charge, died Monday afternoon in a holding cell at Police Headquarters.
State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has sent investigators from his new team tasked with probing police-involved deaths to Westchester County, spokesman Eric Soufer said. ...

As a local I am glad the State Attorney General is investigating this as a lot of things get covered up in this city.

A few more details

{snipped} Shari Harris, a spokesman for the Mt. Vernon Mayor Ernie Davis, said in a statement that Turner had reported “various medical issues” after her arrest and was taken to Montefiore-Mount Vernon Hospital on Sunday evening before being returned to her cell.

“She was returned to her cell around 10 p.m. and at 2 a.m. on Monday morning she was removed for fingerprinting and retgurned to her cell a short time thereafter.

When they attempted to awaken her for court on Monday Turner was “unresponsive” and was pronounced dead “shortelry after 2 p.m.”

Apparently she was arrested for stealing crab legs and spent 2 days in a holding cell. It also took 2 days to fingerprint her which was done at 2 am. This is after she complained earlier of not feeling well and returned from the hospital at 10 pm. They found her dead in her cell the next afternoon when she was due for her arraignment in court.

There's a lot of crime in Mount Vernon but it seems like a rather long time to be held for petit larceny without an arraignment.

From the article:

“We know she was requesting medical treatment and it seems that, at some level, the system and the protocols that the city was following failed,” he said.

Osvaldo Gonzalez, a lawyer for the family, said Turner had been arrested Friday after allegedly stealing a small item from a drug store. He said her husband, Herman, went to City Court on Monday to await his wife's arraignment and was told there she would likely be released without bail.

She died Monday afternoon, but

The family did not learn of Turner's death until Tuesday morning when two detectives came to their home to break the news,

:banghead: to all of it.

So what happened between 2 am and 2 pm? When was the last time she was seen alive, they had to have brought her breakfast and lunch right?

Yes, she should have been given something to eat. So sad. Possibly natural causes, but was no one checking in on her after a hospital visit?
ETA:
She was treated for hypertension —*high blood pressure —*and*returned to the cell by ambulance shortly after 10 p.m., they said.
Turner was last seen awake between noon and 1 p.m., they said. She was found dead at 2 p.m. when officers tried to wake her for her arraignment.
Unfortunately the woman had a history of bariatric problems. She had bariatric surgery. She also had hypertension.”

She was last seen between 12- 1pm by people in the jail.
Her husband says the hospital has no record of a visit by his wife.

Possibly, but 42? That stinks. Football players steal crab legs and they become first round draft picks. Or rape some girl. Who cares? They can play ball.

Mother of 8 gets caught stealing crab legs, she ends up dead. Just saying, IMO, that is suspicious.

Sometimes I am embarrassed by this country I love..... Play sports? Here's your pass.

Also from the article posted above: Turner — who had a history of hypertension and had undergone bariatric surgery for weight loss — was taken to Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital on Sunday night after telling cops she didn’t feel well.

So he was sitting there in court while she was already dead??

This is madness. Disgusting.

Sandra Bland
Ralkina Jones
Raynette Turner

That's three black women dead in police custody in just a matter of weeks. That's scary.

With HBP she could have had a stroke.

I'm curious about the hospital visit. It seemed a very short amount of time to be there - before I read her husbands statement about the hospital having no record of her visit. Was she there or not? and was this a police error or a hospital error for releasing her so soon?

This is creepy! What the heck?!

"Four black women have died in police custody since Sandra Bland.
All four deaths are under investigation into how each occurred while in police custody."

With the exception of Ms. Chapman, why did these 3 women die this month shortly after being seen by a hospital?

Autopsy in Turner's case is inconclusive.
The article mentions her 8 children. Did she have custody of any of them?
Not that it has anything to do with her death, it just doesn't make sense.
She was closest to her youngest an 8 yr old that was adopted by a couple in Atlanta?? - I'm confused!

"The cause of Turner’s death is not yet known.*Investigators*are awaiting toxicology reports."

Raynette Turner: Mayor still mum on details
"The truth will be told regardless of where it leads us," Mayor Ernie Davis said.

MOUNT VERNON Mayor Ernest Davis on Wednesday insisted that city officials have been "open and transparent" regarding the July 27 death of Raynette Turner in police custody — but then he and the city's top lawyer refused to answer any questions about Turner's detention....

They said they didn't want to compromise the state Attorney General's probe into Turner's death and promised the city's full cooperation with that investigation, which Davis welcomed for its review of police department's policies.

The vague symptoms plus her history of bariatric surgery and hypertension make me think heart attack. The symptoms are much less clear than in men, generally.
