Mr Simpson was last seen at around 11pm on Saturday at the dance marquee in the Links area of the town.
He is described as 6ft and slim, with short blond hair. He was last seen wearing a green and white top
Coastguard Joins Search
States he failed to contact family/friends after the dance and was last seen at 10:30
Police say he may have left the area around 2am on Sunday morning and headed north in the direction of his home town Embo.
Highland police "very concerned" for wellbeing of man as search stepped up
Searches are continuing today with assistance from Police Scotland and SARDA dogs, rescue helicopter 137, the local Coastguard and the RNLI.
Locals Join Search
Police Scotland said nearly 170 people helped out with efforts on Tuesday night, with almost 100 joining on Wednesday.
Searches have taken place around the town and shore area, with an appeal to also check gardens and outbuildings.
Mr Simpson was last seen at 01:30 hours on Sunday, leaving the show dance.
Police remain positive
He had been drinking and told friends he was going on to a party.Yesterday’s search covered Skelbo Wood, near the Trentham Hotel, Dornoch air-field and the Struie Golf Course, where the marquee was pitched.
Today’s search concentrated on Camore Woods and the sand dunes from Dornoch Burn South.
Camore is not on the route Lachlan would have been expected to take had he been heading home to Embo, but an officer told volunteers: "We have reasonable grounds behind asking you to search Camore."
He revealed that although the last confirmed sighting of Lachlan had been at 1.30am as the marquee dance was ending, he had later been in telephone contact with a friend, and had been expected to join the friend but had not turned up.
Chief Inspector Gough said Lachlan’s family had reported him missing at 10.30pm on Monday night after realising he had not been at the party he had said he would be attending.

As per the articles above, he was last seen at 10:30 but may have left the area around 2:00. Was he alone in those intervening hours? If he went to a dance or club and was drinking, wouldn't he want to party with his friends? Odd.

What I gather is he intended to meet up with a friend to go to a party after the dance (which ended around 1:30AM ) but never arrived. My guess is the party was in the area of Camore. All speculation of course. What I wonder is how did he intend to get there? On foot?
It seems a bit odd that the family would report him missing so quickly.

Pair of Trainers Found
It is understood that the green coloured canvas shoes similar to Converse footwear, were found on Tuesday evening next to the sewage treatment works beside the Struie Golf Course, but in the opposite direction from Mr Simpson’s home in Embo north of Dornoch.
A pair of trainers found by searchers at a sewage treatment plant near the Struie Golf Course are not connected to Mr Simpson's disappearance.

"We'd like to appeal to all of Lachlan's friends who saw or spoke to him on Saturday night to get in touch with the police on 101. Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, may assist in bringing Lachlan home to us."
Further searches are planned on Saturday and anyone wanting to join is asked to meet at the Dornoch Social Club at 10am.
Police dogs, coastguard and an RAF mountain rescue team have all been assisting the hunt.

I am pleased to see the media keeping on top of this. I truly hope Lachlan was just a bit knackered on his trek from the party and will be found hunkered down somewhere where he became lost.

Specialist dog teams searching for Lachlan Simpson
The search effort has been scaled down with police no longer organising volunteers to help look for Mr Simpson.
However, Police Scotland said it was still drawing on specialist resources and officers were continuing to investigate his disappearance.
"The dogs are highly-trained and to ensure their focus is fully on tracing Lachlan, we would ask members of the public to refrain from approaching them whilst they are actively searching."

Thanks for the updates Vail it is very sad Lachlan is still missing. I am keeping an eye out for any news. Sadly the search has been wound down which is very disappointing for his family and friends especially I am sure.

Yes I agree, it is very troubling, because so much ground has been covered and his hoodie should be so easy to spot. There is so little insight as to his relationships to know if he was suicidal or had any enemies. I almost feel he has accepted a ride somewhere else.
I wonder, are there septic systems or other underground vaults in Dornoch where they have not yet searched? I am reminded of a man from Oregon who disappeared in the middle of the night and was found inside a treatment facility pipe. I don't think they ever solved how he got there.
Area search focuses on The Links
I am curious how the last search with dogs turned out, if there were any leads at all...
This post here has some good local info in comments.
